Simple Distillation Apparatus

Standard Joint · Borosilicate Glass 3.3

Simple distillation is the most fundamental separation and purification technique in the laboratory. It utilizes the difference in volatility among components in a liquid mixture — heating vaporizes the lower-boiling fraction, which is then condensed and collected. This apparatus is ideal for separating liquid mixtures with significantly different boiling points, purifying liquids from non-volatile impurities, recovering solvents, and determining purity by boiling point measurement.

Borosilicate Glass 3.3 Standard Joint · Multiple Sizes Available GB/T 21298-2017 Compliant Complete Kit · Ready to Assemble

📐 Selection Guidelines: The distillation flask should be approximately 2× the volume of the liquid to be distilled. Fill volume should be between 1/3 and 2/3 of the flask capacity. For distillate boiling points above 150℃, we recommend switching to an air condenser to prevent thermal stress cracking. This kit comes standard with a 500ml flask and 300mm straight condenser, suitable for 100–300ml sample volumes.

Product Description

I. Principle of Distillation

Simple distillation consists of three core steps: vaporization, condensation, and collection. The principle is straightforward — as temperature increases, the vapor pressure of a liquid rises. When the vapor pressure of a component equals the external atmospheric pressure, the liquid boils. The temperature at which this occurs is the boiling point at that pressure. By carefully controlling the heating temperature, the lower-boiling component is preferentially vaporized, condensed, and collected, separating it from higher-boiling components.

Simple distillation works best for mixtures with large boiling point differences (typically > 80–100℃), or for purifying liquids from non-volatile impurities. If the boiling points are close, the separation efficiency drops significantly — consider switching to a fractional distillation apparatus.

II. Apparatus Components & Functions

  • Heat Source (Heating Mantle/Water Bath/Oil Bath) — Provides stable, controllable heat for even boiling
  • Distillation Flask (Round-Bottom Flask) — Holds the liquid to be distilled, withstands heating
  • Distillation Head — Connects flask to condenser, provides vapor pathway and thermometer port
  • Thermometer — Monitors vapor temperature to assess composition and purity
  • Straight Condenser — Cools vapor back to liquid; the core heat exchanger in the setup
  • Adapter (Vacuum Take-Off) — Directs condensate into the receiver, prevents back-flow
  • Receiver Flask (Erlenmeyer Flask) — Collects the distilled fraction
  • Iron Stand & Universal Clamps — Secure the entire assembly, ensuring vertical stability

III. Material & Workmanship

All glass components are manufactured from borosilicate glass 3.3. This material has a low coefficient of thermal expansion (approx. 3.3×10⁻⁶/K), offering excellent thermal shock resistance and a working range of 0–400℃. It also provides superior chemical stability — resistant to water, acids, alkalis, and organic solvents — ensuring no impurity leaching over long-term use.

All ground joints are precision-machined to the standard 1:10 taper, and are available in 14/20, 19/22, 24/40, and 29/42 sizes to suit your existing laboratory glassware system. The joint surfaces are smooth and provide excellent sealing performance under atmospheric pressure without the need for vacuum grease.

✦ How to Choose the Right Joint Size?
14/20 — Micro or semi-micro scale experiments, small sample volumes
19/22 — Small to medium-scale synthesis, common teaching lab size
24/40 — The most versatile size, broadest compatibility (recommended)
29/42 — Large-scale preparative work, high throughput

IV. Quality Standards

This apparatus is designed, manufactured, and inspected in accordance with GB/T 21298-2017 "Laboratory Glassware — Distillation Apparatus". Individual components also comply with their respective national standards:

  • Round-Bottom Flasks: GB/T 15725.4
  • Condensers: GB/T 15725.6
  • Erlenmeyer Flasks: GB/T 15725.3

Operation & Maintenance

User Guide

The following is the standard operating procedure for the simple distillation apparatus. All steps are independent of joint size and apply to 14/20, 19/22, 24/40, and 29/42 configurations.

03

I. Safety Check & Preparation

  • Inspect all glass components for cracks, chips, or damaged ground joints
  • Work in a fume hood — wear lab coat, safety goggles, and heat-resistant gloves
  • Confirm the heating device (heating mantle or water/oil bath) is functioning properly
  • Prepare cooling water source (tap or recirculating chiller) with adequate flow
04

Standard assembly sequence (bottom to top, left to right)

  1. Secure the distillation flask on the iron stand using a universal clamp at the correct height
  2. Carefully pour the liquid to be distilled into the flask using a funnel — fill to 1/3 to 2/3 of flask capacity
  3. Add 2–3 boiling stones or anti-bumping granules to prevent bumping
  4. Attach the distillation head to the flask — ensure the ground joint is properly seated (all components use matching joint sizes)
  5. Insert the thermometer into the adapter — position the bulb just below the side arm junction of the distillation head
  6. Connect the straight condenser to the side arm of the distillation head
  7. Attach the adapter to the lower end of the condenser, and place the receiver flask underneath
  8. Secure the condenser with a second universal clamp — ensure the entire apparatus is vertical and level
  9. Verify all ground joints are properly aligned and seated
05

III. Cooling Water

  • Start cooling water BEFORE heating. Ensure the condenser jacket is completely filled with water — no air bubbles
  • Follow the bottom-in, top-out principle — water enters at the lower port and exits from the upper port
  • Water flow should be moderate — steady and bubble-free, not overly turbulent
06

IV. Heating & Distillation

  • Use a heating mantle or water/oil bath — NEVER use an open flame with flammable solvents
  • Gradually increase the heating temperature and observe the liquid begin to boil
  • Adjust the heating rate so the distillate drops at a steady rate of approximately 1 drop per second
  • Monitor the thermometer closely — record the temperature when the first drop of distillate appears (initial boiling point)
  • A stable boiling point during distillation indicates a pure fraction; if the temperature rises continuously, the composition is changing
  • If needed, switch receiver flasks to collect different temperature fractions
  • Record the volume and temperature range of each fraction collected
06

V. Shutdown & Disassembly

  • Never distill to dryness! Always leave a small residue in the flask to prevent overheating and cracking
  • Turn off the heat source and allow the apparatus to cool naturally
  • Once no more distillate is collected, turn off the cooling water
  • Disassemble in the reverse order (top to bottom, right to left)
  • Clean all glassware thoroughly, dry, and store properly

📌 Thermometer Position is Critical: If the thermometer bulb is positioned too high, readings will be low; too low, and readings will be high. The correct position is with the bulb just at the level of the side arm junction — this ensures accurate measurement of the actual vapor temperature.

💡 From a Seasoned Lab Technician: Distillation rate is not about speed — 1 drop per second is the "golden rate." Faster rates reduce separation efficiency (higher-boiling components get carried over); slower rates waste time and reduce throughput. A stable thermometer reading indicates a pure fraction; if the temperature steadily climbs, the composition is changing — switch receiver flasks or stop the distillation.
