Heated Stirring Synthesis Apparatus

Standard Joint · Borosilicate Glass 3.3

The heated stirring synthesis apparatus is a functional upgrade of the standard reflux setup. The key design feature is the use of a three-neck round-bottom flask instead of a single-neck flask, adding mechanical stirring capability to the reflux function. It simultaneously enables heating, reflux, and stirring, with support for temperature monitoring, addition, and inert gas protection. This apparatus is particularly suited for multiphase reactions, heterogeneous synthesis, polymerization, and reactions requiring precise control of reaction conditions.

📐 Selection Guidelines: The three-neck flask capacity should be 1.5–2× the volume of the reaction mixture. The center neck is for the stirrer — confirm the stirrer shaft matches the joint size; side necks accommodate the condenser and thermometer adapter. Stirrer power and speed range should be chosen based on the viscosity and scale of the reaction system — the standard configuration is a 100–1500 rpm adjustable mechanical stirrer with a PTFE stirrer blade that is corrosion-resistant and non-contaminating.

Product Description

I. Principle & Function

The heated stirring synthesis apparatus is a multifunctional reaction platform developed from the standard reflux setup. The key innovation is the use of a three-neck round-bottom flask — each neck serves a distinct function:

  • Center Neck — For the stirrer, providing mechanical agitation for uniform heating and thorough mixing
  • Side Neck 1 — For the spherical condenser, enabling reflux and preventing solvent loss
  • Side Neck 2 — For the thermometer adapter (or dropping funnel/gas inlet), enabling temperature monitoring or functional expansion

Heating, reflux, and stirring operate simultaneously, ensuring the reaction proceeds under homogeneous, constant-temperature conditions. Compared to single-neck flasks, the three-neck design solves the problem of ineffective stirring in conventional reflux setups — ideal for multiphase reactions, heterogeneous systems, high-viscosity media, and syntheses requiring precise temperature control.

✦ Comparison with Standard Reflux: Standard Reflux: Single-neck flask — heating and reflux only, difficult to stir.
Heated Stirring Synthesis: Three-neck flask — heating + reflux + stirring simultaneously.
Best for: Multiphase reactions, heterogeneous synthesis, polymerization requiring agitation.

II. Apparatus Components & Functions

  • Three-Neck Round-Bottom Flask — Core reaction vessel; three-neck design supports multiple interfaces; capacity based on reaction scale
  • Mechanical Stirrer — Provides agitation power; typically 100–1500 rpm adjustable with PTFE stirrer blade
  • Spherical Condenser — Core reflux component; condenses vapor and returns it to the reaction system
  • Thermometer Adapter — Monitors reaction temperature; bulb immersed below the liquid surface
  • Heating Mantle (or Oil Bath) — Provides uniform, controllable heat — often with magnetic stirring capability
  • Iron Stand & Universal Clamps — Secure the flask, condenser, and stirrer; ensure stability

III. Stirrer Type Comparison

  • PTFE Paddle Stirrer — Standard configuration; corrosion-resistant, non-contaminating; suitable for most organic syntheses
  • Stainless Steel Paddle Stirrer — Suitable for high-temperature reactions; high mechanical strength
  • Anchor Stirrer — Suitable for high-viscosity systems; excellent wall-scraping performance
  • Turbine Stirrer — Suitable for emulsification and dispersion requiring high shear force

IV. Material & Workmanship

All glass components are manufactured from borosilicate glass 3.3. All ground joints are precision-machined to the standard 1:10 taper, available in GB, ISO, and ASTM standard sizes. The stirrer blade is made from corrosion-resistant PTFE, compatible with glass flasks.

This apparatus is designed and manufactured in compliance with GB/T 21298-2017 "Laboratory Glassware — Distillation Apparatus".

Operation & Maintenance

User Guide

The following is the standard operating procedure for the heated stirring synthesis apparatus. Stirrer installation and adjustment are critical steps.

🚨 Critical Sequence (DO NOT REVERSE):
Startup: Cooling water ON → Start stirrer (low speed) → Heat → Adjust to target speed
Shutdown: Turn off heat → Cool → Stop stirrer → Turn off cooling water

03

I. Safety Check & Preparation

  • Inspect all glass components for cracks or chips
  • Check the stirrer for proper operation — ensure the blade is securely attached
  • Work in a fume hood — wear lab coat, safety goggles, and gloves
  • Confirm the heating device (heating mantle) is functioning properly
  • Prepare cooling water source with adequate flow
04

Standard assembly sequence (bottom to top)

  1. Secure the three-neck flask on the iron stand, positioned in the heating mantle
  2. Add reactants to the flask — fill to 1/3 to 1/2 of flask capacity
  3. Install the stirrer in the center neck — position the blade 5–10mm above the flask bottom
  4. Install the spherical condenser in one side neck — ensure the ground joint is properly seated
  5. Install the thermometer adapter in the other side neck — the thermometer bulb should be immersed ~1cm below the liquid surface
  6. Secure the flask neck, condenser, and stirrer with universal clamps
  7. The condenser top must remain open — vented to atmosphere (never seal!)
05

III. Cooling Water & Stirring

  • Turn on cooling water first — follow bottom-in, top-out principle
  • Start the stirrer at 100–200 rpm (low-speed start to prevent splashing)
  • Observe smooth operation — no abnormal vibration or noise
  • Once confirmed that the shaft is not rubbing against the neck, gradually increase speed
06

IV. Heating the Reaction

  • Start the heating mantle and slowly raise the temperature to the target
  • As temperature increases, solution viscosity may change — adjust stirring speed to maintain uniform mixing
  • Once stable reflux is achieved, both stirrer and heater are in steady-state operation
  • Monitor reaction temperature via the thermometer adapter — ensure temperature remains within the target range
06

V. Addition/Sampling During Reaction

  • Add reagents through the thermometer adapter neck during the reaction if needed
  • Reduce stirring speed when adding to prevent splashing
  • For sampling, use a long dropper through the addition port
  • Seal the neck promptly after sampling to prevent solvent loss
06

VI. Shutdown

  • After reaction completion, turn off the heating device first
  • Keep stirring and cooling water circulating until the apparatus cools to near room temperature
  • Once no more condensate is returned and the system has cooled, stop stirring
  • When no more condensate is returned, turn off the cooling water
  • Disassemble in reverse order
  • Clean all glassware thoroughly — pay special attention to each neck of the three-neck flask and the stirrer blade
  • Dry and store properly

📌 Stirrer Blade Position is Critical: If the blade is too close to the bottom (< 5mm), it will scrape the glass and generate particles; too far (> 15mm) and mixing is poor, leaving bottom material unmixed. The standard position is 5–10mm from the bottom, centered.
Leave a 2–3mm gap between the shaft and the neck wall to prevent friction and contamination.

💡 From a Seasoned Lab Technician: "Start slow, heat later, then fine-tune speed" — this is the standard sequence for any stirred reaction setup.
Stirrer blade selection directly affects reaction quality: paddle blades for low-viscosity systems, anchor blades for high-viscosity, turbine blades for emulsification.
If severe vibration occurs during stirring, stop immediately and check for eccentric or bent shaft.
If you hear friction between the shaft and the neck wall, the shaft may be misaligned — stop and realign.
NEVER adjust the stirrer blade while it is running! Stop first, then adjust.

⚠️ Safety & Compliance Checklist

Stirrer startup

Always start at low speed to prevent splashing and blade damage

Fire/explosion prevention

When refluxing flammable solvents, NO open flame — always use a heating mantle

Electrical safety

Keep stirrer and heating mantle power cords away from heat and water sources

Standard compliance

Apparatus design complies with GB/T 21298-2017

Do not
  • Condenser top must be vented: Never seal a reflux system — pressure buildup risks glass rupture
