Stirrer Adapter

Standard Joint · 14# ~ 29# · Fits Φ6~8mm Stirring Rods

The stirrer adapter is a specialized interface component for connecting mechanical stirrers to reaction vessels in standard taper glassware systems. The lower end features a precision-ground standard taper joint for secure connection to three-neck and four-neck flasks. The hollow interior accommodates stirring rods (glass or PTFE), while the upper sealing mechanism (O-ring or PTFE seal) provides dynamic sealing during rotation. Available in high-borosilicate glass 3.3 or full PTFE construction, the product fully complies with Chinese National Standards (GB/T), US ASTM E, and ISO 3585 standard taper specifications. Offered in glass, PTFE, and mercury seal configurations to suit different experimental requirements.

Product Description

The stirrer adapter is a critical interface component for connecting mechanical stirrers to reaction vessels in standard taper glassware systems. The lower end features a precision-ground standard taper joint for secure connection to three-neck and four-neck flasks. The hollow interior accommodates stirring rods (glass or PTFE), while the upper sealing mechanism (O-ring or PTFE seal) maintains system integrity during rotation, preventing air ingress or gas leakage.

Although the stirrer adapter resembles a thermometer adapter in appearance, they serve different functions: the thermometer adapter holds a stationary thermometer (static seal), while the stirrer adapter allows a rotating stirring rod to pass through while maintaining a seal (dynamic seal). This requires sufficient internal clearance for rod rotation and durable, reliable sealing components.

Key Features

  • Borosilicate Glass 3.3 / PTFE: Glass type meets ISO 3585, thermal shock 280°C; PTFE type resists all chemical solvents
  • Multi‑Standard Compliance: Precision‑ground 1:10 taper meets GB/T, ASTM E, and ISO 3585 standard taper specifications
  • Dynamic Sealing: O-ring or PTFE seal maintains integrity during rotation
  • Versatile Rod Compatibility: Fits 6-8mm glass or PTFE stirring rods
  • PTFE Construction: Full PTFE version resists strong acids/bases, no lubrication needed
  • Mercury Seal Option: Liquid seal (mercury, glycerol, or water) for high-vacuum stirring

Quality Assurance

Each stirrer adapter is inspected for taper accuracy, dynamic seal integrity, and surface finish to ensure reliable performance during stirring operations. Custom bulk orders are welcome.

Tip: The stirrer adapter differs from the thermometer adapter in function. Confirm that your stirring rod O.D. (6-8mm) matches the adapter. Replace O-rings promptly if worn. PTFE types require no grease.

Applications

Typical Uses

Mechanical Stirring

Connect mechanical stirrers to three-neck and four-neck flasks for uniform mixing

Atmospheric Synthesis

Bearing interface for stirring shafts in atmospheric reactions

Inert Atmosphere Reactions

Maintain system seal during stirring to prevent air ingress

High-Vacuum Reactions

Mercury seal adapters enable stirring under high vacuum

Aggressive Systems

PTFE adapters for strong acid/base reactions

Compatible Equipment

Standard joint three-neck and four-neck flasks

Mechanical and electric stirrers

Glass and PTFE stirring rods

Reactors, Schlenk tubes

Tip: The stirrer adapter differs from the thermometer adapter in function. Confirm that your stirring rod O.D. (6-8mm) matches the adapter. Replace O-rings promptly if worn.

Operation & Maintenance

User Guide

03

Before Use

  • Inspect for cracks, chips, or scratches on any joint
  • Check that the O-ring or PTFE seal is intact and not deformed
  • Confirm stirring rod O.D. is 6-8mm
  • Clean all joint surfaces with a soft cloth to remove particulates
04

Stirring Rod Installation

  • Insert the stirring rod through the seal and adapter into the flask
  • Adjust to the desired depth
  • Tighten the cap to create a dynamic seal around the rod
  • Do not over-tighten — the rod should rotate freely
  • Manually rotate the rod before starting the stirrer to confirm smooth operation
05

Connection

  • Align the lower joint with the receiving apparatus and gently twist to seat
  • Use a clamp on the adapter body for support
  • For vacuum applications, ensure all joints are well-seated
06

Cleaning & Storage

  • Clean immediately after use to prevent residue buildup
  • Use soft brushes and appropriate detergents for the inner tube and joint
  • Replace seals if worn
  • PTFE types can be cleaned with standard solvents
  • Air dry and store with protective paper between ground joints
  • Protect joints from impacts

3. Quick Selection Checklist

Follow this decision flow to quickly identify the right configuration:

  • ① Media type? Standard organics → Glass  |  Acids/bases → PTFE
  • ② Vacuum requirement? Standard seal → O-ring type  |  High vacuum → Mercury seal
  • ③ Scale? Micro → 14#  |  Standard → 19#/24#  |  Large → 29#+
  • ④ Rod diameter? Standard 6~8mm stirring rods

Safety Precautions

  • If abnormal noise or vibration occurs during stirring, stop immediately
  • Wear protective gloves and safety goggles
Do not
  • Never use cracked or damaged adapters under vacuum
  • Avoid excessive force when installing stirring rods
  • For mercury seal types, handle mercury with care to avoid spills
