Porcelain Mortars & Pestles

Unglazed / Glazed · 60mm~160mm · Grinding and Mixing Staple

Porcelain mortars with matching pestles are the classic tool for grinding, crushing and mixing solid samples. Made of quality hard porcelain, the unglazed inner wall adds friction for efficient grinding, while the glazed option cleans easily with low residue. Five diameters from 60mm to 160mm cover common sample sizes.

Product Description

1. Overview

Porcelain mortars process solid samples by rolling and grinding, ideal for crystals, granules and caked reagents. The dense hard-porcelain body sheds few particles, minimizing sample contamination.

Unglazed walls offer high friction for thorough crushing; glazed walls clean easily for mixing and light grinding. Five diameters from 60mm to 160mm cover small to larger batches.

Grind by rolling against the wall in circles, coarse to fine. Strong oxidizers and reducers each require a dedicated mortar — never share, to avoid dangerous reactions.

🔬 Types & Features:
Unglazed — high friction, fast crushing.
Glazed — easy to clean, low residue.
Five diameters — 60~160mm.
Matching pestle — comfortable, efficient grinding.

2. Key Parameters

  • Material: hard porcelain
  • Diameter: 60 / 80 / 100 / 130 / 160 mm
  • Inner wall: unglazed / glazed options
  • Included: one matching pestle
  • Corrosion: tolerates common acids and alkalis
  • Use: mainly dry grinding, limited wet grinding

3. Material & Workmanship

Sintered from quality ceramic stock with a hard, low-shedding grinding surface. Unglazed walls are uniformly roughened; glazed walls are smoothly coated. Appearance and dimensions are inspected per batch.

For trace analysis, keep a dedicated glazed mortar to avoid cross-contamination; routine crushing is faster with unglazed walls.

Operation & Maintenance

Operation Guide

Standard operating guide for porcelain mortars and pestles.

03

Before Use

  • Check bowl and pestle for cracks and shedding
  • Clean and dry the grinding surfaces
  • Choose unglazed or glazed per sample nature
  • Wear goggles for hard samples
04

Procedure

  1. Charge to no more than one-third of bowl volume
  2. Roll the pestle against the wall in circles
  3. Grind coarse first, then finer, building pressure gradually
  4. Regather the sample with a spatula as needed
  5. Transfer at the target particle size
  6. Clean and dry the set after use
05

Cleaning & Care

  • Clean immediately to prevent caking
  • Soft brushes reach unglazed texture
  • Use dedicated mortars for contamination-sensitive tasks
  • Store bowl and pestle separately, cushioned

💡 Lab veteran tips: Roll, do not pound — circular rolling beats hammering.
Coarse to fine — staged grinding saves effort.
Dedicated mortars — never share between oxidizers and reducers.
Mind spatter — press lightly first, then harder.

⚠️ Safety Notes

Spatter protection

goggles for hard samples

Charge control

one-third volume maximum

Posture

stable bench, two-handed operation

Do not
  • Dangerous reactions: never grind oxidizers with reducers together
