Fritted Chromatography Column

Built-in G2 Frit · ID 10mm ~ 100mm+ · Effective Length 200mm ~ 1500mm

The fritted chromatography column is an enhanced version of the standard chromatography column, featuring a sintered glass frit at the lower end. The frit effectively supports the packing material, preventing silica gel, resin, or other stationary phases from washing out of the column, while ensuring uniform eluent distribution for improved separation efficiency. Manufactured from high-borosilicate glass 3.3, it offers excellent chemical resistance, thermal shock resistance, and high clarity. The upper end features a standard taper joint for connection to solvent reservoirs or chromatography accessories. G2 frit (20-35μm) is the standard configuration, with G1/G3/G4 and custom pore sizes available to precisely match packing particle size and separation requirements. All joints feature precision-ground 1:10 taper, compliant with Chinese National Standards (GB/T), US ASTM E, and ISO 3585 standard taper specifications. Custom IDs, lengths, frit grades, stopcock configurations, and joint sizes are available upon request.

Product Description

The fritted chromatography column is an enhanced version of the standard chromatography column, featuring a sintered glass frit at the lower end. The frit eliminates the need for manual placement of glass wool or column supports, effectively prevents packing material from washing out, extends packing life, and ensures consistent and reproducible separation performance.

Manufactured from high-borosilicate glass 3.3, the column offers excellent clarity for real-time observation of bed status and sample migration. The upper end features a standard taper joint for connection to solvent reservoirs or chromatography accessories. The G2 frit (20-35μm) is the standard configuration, with G1/G3/G4 and custom pore sizes available to precisely match packing particle size and separation requirements.

✦ Frit Customization Service: G1, G2, G3, G4, and custom pore sizes available. Contact us with your packing particle size and separation requirements for precise frit matching.

Key Features

  • Borosilicate Glass 3.3: Meets ISO 3585, low thermal expansion, thermal shock resistance up to 280°C, excellent chemical durability
  • Multi‑Standard Compliance: Precision‑ground 1:10 taper meets GB/T, ASTM E, and ISO 3585 standard taper specifications for full interchangeability
  • Built-in Sintered Frit: G2 frit (20-35μm) standard; G1/G3/G4 and custom pore sizes available to precisely match packing particle size
  • Thick-Wall Design: Enhanced strength and safety for pressurized operation
  • Minimal Dead Volume: Frit design minimizes dead volume to prevent secondary mixing of separated compounds
  • High Clarity: >92% light transmission for real-time bed observation

Quality Assurance

Each fritted chromatography column is inspected for dimensional accuracy, frit integrity, and taper precision to ensure reliable sealing with all standard joint components. Custom bulk orders are welcome.

Tip: No additional glass wool support is needed — the frit provides reliable packing support. Check the frit for blockage before use. For clogged frits, use ultrasonic cleaning or back-flushing.

Applications

Typical Uses

Column Chromatography

Purification of natural products, synthetic compounds — frit prevents silica gel packing loss

Protein Purification

Affinity, ion exchange, and gel filtration chromatography

Flash Chromatography

Rapid purification (thick-wall design enhances pressurized operation safety)

Vacuum Chromatography

Vacuum barb models enable vacuum-assisted flash chromatography

Preparative Purification

Large-scale sample purification

Industrial Production

Bulk purification, continuous production (extra-long columns)

Compatible Equipment

Standard joint solvent reservoirs, constant-pressure funnels

Chromatography accessories (stopcocks, adapters)

Ring stands and clamps (specialized supports for extra-long columns)

Peristaltic pumps, fraction collectors, vacuum pumps (vacuum models)

Tip: Always use matching standard joint sizes for optimal sealing. Fritted columns can be flexibly combined with other standard joint glassware. The frit is a fragile component — avoid scratching the frit surface with hard objects.

Operation & Maintenance

User Guide

03

Before Use

  • Inspect for cracks, chips, or scratches on any joint
  • Check that the frit is intact and not blocked
  • Clean all joint surfaces with a soft cloth to remove particulates
  • Confirm that the joint size matches your accessories
  • Prepare packing material, eluent, and collection vessels
04

Packing Procedure (Frit replaces glass wool support)

  • Mount the column vertically on a stand or specialized support
  • Add a small volume of eluent to wet the frit
  • Slowly add packing material while gently tapping the column for even settling
  • Add a layer of glass wool or filter paper on top of the packing
  • No glass wool needed at the bottom — the frit provides reliable support
05

Chromatography Operation

  • Connect the upper joint to a solvent reservoir or constant-pressure funnel
  • Apply the sample and begin elution
  • Collect fractions based on the separation profile
  • Adjust flow rate to optimize separation
06

Cleaning & Storage

  • Rinse immediately after use with appropriate solvent
  • For clogged frits, use ultrasonic cleaning or back-flushing
  • Use soft brushes and appropriate detergents for the tube interior
  • Air dry and store with protective paper between ground joints
  • Protect the frit and joints from impacts
