Product Description

The pear-shaped separatory funnel is the standard apparatus for liquid-liquid extraction in the lab. Its pear-shaped (Squibb) body provides a clear interface between layers, making phase separation accurate and easy. Manufactured from high-borosilicate glass 3.3 with a short neck and precision-ground standard taper joints, it features a stopcock for precise flow control.

The top stopper is available in glass, PTFE, or plastic to suit different chemical systems, while the bottom stopcock is available in glass or PTFE for optimal chemical compatibility. Joint sizes No.22 and No.27 are specially designed for separatory funnels — shorter and resistant to seizing.

✦ Customizable Seal Configuration: Top stopper (Glass/PTFE/Plastic) and bottom stopcock (Glass/PTFE) can be freely combined to meet the specific chemical resistance and sealing requirements of your application.

Key Features

  • Borosilicate Glass 3.3: Meets ISO 3585, low thermal expansion, thermal shock resistance, excellent chemical durability
  • Pear-Shaped Design: Clear phase separation interface for accurate extraction
  • Short Neck: Minimizes liquid retention, ideal for extraction operations
  • Top Stopper Options: Glass (organic solvent compatible, high clarity), PTFE (resists all chemicals, no lubrication), Plastic (lightweight, cost-effective)
  • Bottom Stopcock Options: PTFE (resists acids/bases, no lubrication, excellent seal) or Glass (organic solvent compatible, cost-effective)
  • Standard Joint: 1:10 taper, fully interchangeable, reliable sealing

Quality Assurance

Each pear-shaped separatory funnel is inspected for dimensional accuracy, stopcock seal integrity, and taper precision to ensure reliable sealing with all standard joint components. Custom bulk orders are welcome.

Tip: Check stopcock rotation and stopper seal before use. Glass stopcocks may require a thin layer of vacuum grease; PTFE stopcocks require no lubrication. Remember to vent during shaking to prevent pressure buildup.

Applications

Typical Uses

Liquid-Liquid Extraction

Isolate target compounds from reaction mixtures — pear-shaped design for clear separation

Washing Operations

Wash organic phases with acid, base, or brine

Continuous Extraction

Combine with condensers and distillation heads

Pharmaceutical R&D

Purification of drug intermediates and APIs

Teaching Labs

Organic and inorganic chemistry education

Compatible Equipment

Standard joint flasks, condensers, distillation heads

Ring stands and clamps

Vacuum pumps (for vacuum extraction)

Tip: Always use matching standard joint sizes for optimal sealing. For volatile solvents, operate in a fume hood and vent frequently during shaking.

Operation & Maintenance

User Guide

03

Before Use

  • Inspect for cracks, chips, or scratches
  • Check stopcock rotation and ensure it is closed
  • Verify stopper seal
  • Glass stopcock: apply thin vacuum grease if needed
  • PTFE stopcock: no lubrication needed
04

Extraction Procedure

  • Add solution and extractant, insert the stopper
  • Shake gently (with venting) to mix phases
  • Allow layers to separate, then drain the lower layer through the stopcock
  • Pour the upper layer out through the top
05

Venting

  • After shaking, point the funnel away from yourself, slowly open the stopcock to release pressure
  • Repeat until pressure is equalized
06

Cleaning & Storage

  • Clean immediately after use to prevent residue buildup
  • Use soft brushes and mild detergents; never use abrasive materials
  • Air dry and store with protective paper between ground joints
  • For long-term storage, remove the stopcock

Pear-Shaped Separatory Funnel · Selection Guide

Four key dimensions determine the right pear-shaped separatory funnel for your system: capacity, top stopper material, bottom stopcock material, and joint size.

1. By Capacity

CapacityTypical Use
10 ~ 60mlMicro extraction, small sample volumes
125 ~ 250mlStandard lab applications, most common
500 ~ 1000mlPreparative extraction, medium sample volumes
2000 ~ 3000mlLarge-scale extraction, industrial applications

2. By Top Stopper Material

MaterialFeaturesTypical Use
GlassResists most organics, high clarityStandard organic synthesis
PTFEResists all chemicals, no lubricationAggressive chemical systems
PlasticLightweight, cost-effectiveGeneral use, budget-conscious

3. By Bottom Stopcock Material

MaterialFeaturesTypical Use
PTFEResists acids/bases, no lubrication, excellent sealAggressive systems, high purity
GlassRequires grease, cost-effectiveStandard organic solvents

4. Quick Selection Checklist

Follow this decision flow to quickly identify the right configuration:

  • ① Sample volume? < 60ml → 10-60ml  |  Standard → 125-250ml  |  Large → 500-3000ml
  • ② Media type? Standard organics → Glass stopper + Glass stopcock  |  Acids/bases → PTFE stopper + PTFE stopcock
  • ③ Frequency of use? Frequent → PTFE stopcock (no grease)  |  Occasional → Glass stopcock
  • ④ Matching apparatus joint? Match the joint size of your apparatus
