Description

The standard funnel is the most fundamental filtration and transfer tool in the laboratory, widely used in chemistry, biology, pharmaceuticals, environmental testing, and more for liquid filtration, solid-liquid separation, and liquid/powder transfer. Manufactured from borosilicate glass 3.3, it offers excellent chemical resistance and thermal stability.

The funnel body features a 60° standard cone angle for perfect filter paper fit and optimal filtration efficiency. Two stem options are available: short stem for routine filtration and transfer, and long stem for gas-generating apparatus where the tip must be submerged below the liquid surface to prevent gas escape. Sizes range from 25mm to 300mm top diameter. Complies with GB/T 28211-2011 and ISO 4798 standards.

✦ Key Advantages: 60° standard cone angle ensures a perfect filter paper seal; 45° beveled outlet accelerates liquid flow; high transparency allows clear observation of the filtration process; smooth rim prevents filter paper damage.

Key Features

  • Borosilicate Glass 3.3: Low thermal expansion, excellent chemical resistance
  • 60° Standard Cone Angle: Ensures perfect filter paper fit
  • High Transparency: Clear visibility of filtration process
  • Smooth Rim: Prevents filter paper from tearing
  • 45° Beveled Outlet: Accelerates liquid flow
  • Short/Long Stem Options: Short for routine use; long for gas-generating apparatus
  • Wide Size Range: Top diameters from 25mm to 300mm

Quality Assurance

Every standard funnel undergoes rigorous dimensional inspection, visual inspection, and material testing to ensure compliance with applicable national standards. Bulk order customization is available — please contact us for details.

Tip: Always inspect the funnel for cracks or defects before use. Fold filter paper to a cone shape and wet it to ensure it adheres to the inner wall. Keep the liquid level below the filter paper edge. For long stem funnels, ensure the tip is submerged below the liquid surface.

Applications

Typical Applications

Liquid Filtration

Gravity filtration with filter paper to separate solids from liquids

Liquid Transfer

Transferring liquids from larger to smaller-mouth vessels

Powder Transfer

Adding solid powders to reaction vessels

Gas Generation

Long stem funnels for adding liquids with the tip submerged below the liquid surface

Teaching Labs

High school and university chemistry lab courses

Compatible Equipment

Beakers, Erlenmeyer flasks, volumetric flasks, test tubes

Iron stands and utility clamps

Gas-generating apparatus (Kipp generators, gas bottles)

Tip: Use filter paper that matches your funnel diameter. Fold it into a cone shape and wet it to ensure it adheres to the inner wall. Keep the liquid level below the filter paper edge for optimal filtration results.

Standard Funnel Operation Guide

03

I. Before Use

  • Inspect the funnel for cracks, chips, or scratches
  • Clean the funnel with a soft cloth to remove any particles
  • Select the appropriate filter paper size
  • Ensure the receiving vessel mouth is compatible with the funnel size
04

II. Filtration Procedure

  • Fold the filter paper in half twice to form a 90° sector shape
  • Open it into a cone with one side triple-layered and the other single-layered
  • Place the cone into the funnel and wet with a small amount of solvent to seal it against the wall
  • Place the funnel stem against the inner wall of the receiving vessel
  • Use a glass rod to guide the liquid — pour slowly along the rod
  • Rest the glass rod against the triple-layered side of the filter paper to avoid tearing
  • Keep the liquid level below the filter paper edge
05

III. Powder Transfer Procedure

  • Place the funnel stem against the inner wall of the receiving vessel
  • Add powder gradually along the funnel wall using a spatula
  • Tap the funnel gently to help powder flow smoothly
06

IV. Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Clean immediately after use to prevent residue from drying
  • Use a soft brush and mild detergent — never use abrasive tools on the inner wall
  • Air dry naturally after cleaning; avoid impact
  • Store without stacking to prevent deformation or breakage

Standard Funnel · Selection Guide

Selecting the right standard funnel involves three key considerations: stem length, top diameter, and material.

I. By Stem Length

Stem TypeStem LengthBest For
Short Stem40 ~ 200mm (varies with diameter)Routine filtration, liquid transfer — simple and convenient
Long Stem~150mm (fixed)Gas-generating apparatus — tip must be submerged below liquid surface

II. By Top Diameter

Top DiameterBest ForRecommended Filter Paper
25 ~ 40mmMicro-scale operations, small vesselsΦ40-55mm
50 ~ 60mmRoutine lab use — most commonΦ70-90mm
75 ~ 90mmMedium-scale filtrationΦ110-125mm
100 ~ 150mmLarge-volume filtration, rapid pouringΦ150-185mm
180 ~ 300mmIndustrial-scale, high-throughput filtrationΦ240-300mm

III. By Material

MaterialFeaturesBest For
Borosilicate Glass 3.3High temperature resistance, chemical resistance, high clarityMost laboratory applications
Soda-lime GlassGood clarity, lower cost, not heat-resistantRoutine operations without heating (budget-conscious)

IV. Quick Selection Matrix

Follow this decision flow to quickly find the right size:

  • ① What's your application? Routine filtration/transfer → Short stem  |  Gas generation → Long stem
  • ② What's your volume? Micro (< 50ml) → 25-40mm  |  Routine (50-500ml) → 50-90mm  |  Large (>500ml) → 100-300mm
  • ③ Will you apply heat? Yes → Borosilicate Glass 3.3  |  No → Soda-lime Glass (budget option)

Safety Precautions

  • Always work in a fume hood when handling strong acids, bases, or flammable liquids
  • Wear protective gloves and safety goggles
Do not
  • Never use a cracked or damaged funnel
