Heating & Stirring Set

Heating Mantle · Magnetic Stirrer · Temperature Sensor

Heating and stirring are the two most fundamental operations in the lab — reactions need temperature, and homogeneity needs stirring. This heating & stirring set includes heating mantles, a magnetic stirrer, stir bars, and a temperature sensor, covering heating from 250ml to 1000ml flasks and stirring up to 5L. The heating mantle provides uniform, controllable heat, and the magnetic stirrer delivers quiet, reliable agitation — together they are the standard configuration for synthesis, distillation, reflux, and extraction.

📐 Selection Guidelines: The heating mantle capacity should match your flask size — a 250ml heating mantle for a 250ml flask, 500ml for 500ml, and so on. The magnetic stirrer should be rated for 20% more than your largest vessel — e.g., a 3-5L stirrer for 2L flasks. For temperature sensors, PT100 with ±0.5℃ accuracy is sufficient for most applications — upgrade to thermocouple for higher precision or higher temperatures.

  • Heating mantle recommendations — 250ml, 500ml, 1000ml options
  • Digital temperature control — real-time display, ±0.5℃ accuracy
  • Brushless DC motor — quiet operation, long service life
  • PT100 temperature sensor — precise, fast response
  • Complete setup — mantles, stirrer, sensor, stir bars, all included

Product Description

I. Heating Mantle — Delivering "Temperature" to Reactions

The heating mantle is one of the most common heating devices in the lab. It uses embedded resistance wire to generate heat, transferring it evenly to the flask above. Compared to electric hot plates and open flames, heating mantles offer uniform heating, precise temperature control, and no open flame — much safer when heating flammable solvents.

This set includes 250ml and 500ml heating mantles, covering the two most common sizes for routine synthesis. Each mantle is equipped with a digital temperature controller that displays current temperature in real time with ±0.5℃ accuracy. The heating mantle inserts are stainless steel — corrosion-resistant and easy to clean.

✦ Heating Mantle vs Hot Plate vs Oil Bath:

Heating Mantle: Even heat, no flame, precise control — the most versatile choice for most synthesis
Hot Plate: Fast heating but open flame — fire risk with flammable solvents, poor temperature control
Oil Bath: Uniform at high temperatures (>300℃) — but messy, greasy, and poses fire risk

II. Magnetic Stirrer — Making Reactions "Move"

The magnetic stirrer uses a rotating magnetic field to drive a stir bar, providing quiet, contactless stirring. Compared to mechanical stirring, magnetic stirring produces no noise, has no mechanical seal issues, and is ideal for sealed reaction systems.

This set's magnetic stirrer features a brushless DC motor — quiet (<40dB), long-lasting (24-hour continuous operation is fine). Maximum stirring capacity is 5L, with a speed range of 100–1500 rpm, covering everything from test tubes to 5L flasks. The stirrer plate is ceramic-coated — chemically resistant and easy to clean.

III. Temperature Sensor — Seeing the Temperature

The temperature sensor is key to closed-loop temperature control. A PT100 sensor immersed in the reaction solution measures temperature in real time and feeds it back to the controller, which automatically adjusts heating power based on the setpoint. Without a sensor, you're adjusting temperature by guesswork — with one, you get precise control: set the temperature and that's what the flask gets.

IV. Material & Workmanship

Heating mantle housings are cold-rolled steel with a powder-coated finish — rust-resistant and durable. Heating elements are nickel-chromium alloy wire with high-temperature insulation — long service life. The magnetic stirrer motor is a brushless DC motor — maintenance-free. The temperature sensor is stainless steel PT100 — corrosion-resistant, fast response.

User Guide

The keys to using a heating mantle and magnetic stirrer are temperature sensor insertion depth and stir bar selection. Here are the essentials.

🚨 Three rules to remember:
① Add stir bar before liquid, before heating — order matters
② Sensor must be immersed at least 1cm — too shallow gives inaccurate readings; too deep hits the flask bottom
③ Heating mantle must match flask capacity — a 250ml flask needs a 250ml mantle; mismatches cause uneven heating

03

I. Before You Start

  • Check the heating mantle power cord — any damage?
  • Check the stirrer plate — is it clean and free of residues?
  • Check the temperature sensor — bent or damaged sensors are unsafe
  • Check stir bars — cracked bars can contaminate the reaction
  • Confirm the flask capacity matches the heating mantle
04

Assembly sequence

  1. Place the magnetic stirrer on a stable, level surface
  2. Add the stir bar to the flask — stir bar first, then liquid — order matters
  3. Place the flask in the heating mantle, and the heating mantle on the stirrer plate
  4. Insert the temperature sensor through the flask opening — 1–2cm below the liquid surface
  5. Secure the flask and sensor with an iron stand and clamp
  6. Connect power and start the stirrer and heating mantle
05

III. Startup & Parameter Setting

  • Start stirring first, then heating — allows the liquid to circulate and prevents localized overheating
  • Start the stirrer at 100–200 rpm, then gradually increase to the target speed
  • Set the heating mantle temperature and start heating
  • Monitor the digital display to confirm the temperature is rising steadily
06

IV. Monitoring

  • Watch the stir bar — if it's wobbling, the speed is too high or the bar is off-center
  • Watch the temperature reading — the difference between setpoint and actual temperature reflects control accuracy
  • If the temperature overshoots by more than 5℃, reduce heating power or adjust PID parameters
  • If the liquid level drops during the reaction (solvent evaporation), pause heating, top up solvent, then resume
06

V. Shutdown

  • Turn off the heating mantle first
  • Keep the stirrer running to circulate the liquid and dissipate heat
  • When the temperature drops below 60℃, turn off the stirrer
  • Disconnect power, remove the temperature sensor and flask
  • Clean the stir bar, flask, and sensor — wipe the sensor tip clean

📌 Why stir bar first, then liquid:

Always add the stir bar before the liquid. If you add liquid first and then drop the stir bar in, it can splash — especially dangerous with hot liquids.
Stir bar position: The stir bar should sit centered at the bottom of the flask. If it's off-center, it will wobble or spin unevenly, and may even be thrown off (demagnetized).

💡 From a Seasoned Lab Hand:

"Stir bar selection depends on flask size and liquid viscosity" — small flasks (100-250ml) use Φ6×20mm; large flasks (500-1000ml) use Φ8×30mm. For viscous liquids (glycerol, silicone oil), use elliptical stir bars for better efficiency.
The difference between "set temperature" and "actual temperature": The setpoint is the heating mantle temperature, while the actual temperature is the liquid temperature in the flask. There may be a 10-30℃ difference depending on heating power and heat dissipation. Using a PT100 sensor directly monitors the liquid temperature for precise control.
Sensor position: The sensor tip should be suspended in the liquid, not touching the flask bottom or wall — touching gives you flask temperature, not liquid temperature.
Shutdown order: Turn off heating first, then wait for the temperature to drop below 60℃ before turning off stirring — stopping stirring at high temperatures can cause localized overheating.

Care & Notes

⚠️ Safety & Compliance Checklist

Match the heating mantle to the flask

The flask bottom must fully contact the mantle insert — poor contact causes localized overheating

Keep sensor cables away from the heating mantle

Heat can melt the insulation and cause shorts

Always heat flammable solvents in a fume hood

with adequate ventilation

Do not
  • Never operate a heating mantle without a flask: Dry heating will burn out the heating element
  • Avoid splashing with the magnetic stirrer: Excessive stirring speed can cause splashing, especially with low-viscosity solvents
