Borosilicate Glass 3.3 Sintered Frit G3/G4/G5 Options Low Dead Volume · Minimal Sample Loss Hand Vacuum Pump · No External Power

📐 Selection Guidelines: The key to micro filtration is "small" — the 15ml funnel is standard, suitable for 0.5~5ml samples. Frit grade selection depends on particle size: G3 (16~30μm) for routine precipitates and microsphere separation, G4 (4~7μm) for fine particles and larger protein complex clarification, G5 (2~4μm) for ultra-fine particles and bacterial removal. For sample volumes above 5ml, consider switching to a regular vacuum filtration setup.

  • Size matched to your sample — 15ml funnel + 50ml flask, perfect for micro samples
  • Borosilicate Glass 3.3 — chemically resistant, crystal clear
  • Sintered glass frit — uniform pores, no filter paper needed, low dead volume
  • Hand vacuum pump — compact, portable, no external power or tubing required
  • Complete setup — funnel, flask, seal ring, vacuum pump, all included

Product Description

I. What is Micro Filtration

Micro filtration works on the same principle as regular vacuum filtration — vacuum pulls the liquid through, solids stay on top. The difference is: smaller apparatus, smaller samples, less dead volume. Regular vacuum filtration handles hundreds of milliliters and loses a few milliliters without concern — micro filtration deals with 0.1~5ml samples where every drop counts.

The funnel and flask are made small, tubing is short, and sample loss is minimized. Paired with a hand vacuum pump, there's no need for bulky pumps or power cords — you can use it in fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, or even laminar flow hoods.

✦ Micro vs Regular Vacuum Filtration:

Regular Vacuum Filtration: For 100ml+ samples — some loss is acceptable.
Micro Filtration: For 0.5~5ml samples — low dead volume, minimal loss.
Choose based on sample volume — precious, small samples → micro filtration.
If you have plenty of sample, regular filtration is fine.

II. What's in the Setup

  • Micro Fritted Funnel — 15ml capacity, sintered glass frit, no filter paper needed
  • Micro Filter Flask — 50ml capacity, heavy-wall design, side arm for vacuum
  • Seal Ring / O-Ring — Ensures a tight seal between the funnel and flask
  • Hand Vacuum Pump — Compact and lightweight, manually operated, no external power needed
  • Silicone Tubing — Connects the flask to the vacuum pump

III. Choosing the Right Frit Grade

The micro fritted funnel uses a sintered glass frit with uniform pore size. Choose the right grade based on your sample's particle size:

  • G3 Frit (16~30μm) — For routine precipitates, microsphere collection, larger particle removal
  • G4 Frit (4~7μm) — Standard choice; for fine particles, protein complex clarification, cell debris removal
  • G5 Frit (2~4μm) — For ultra-fine particles, larger bacteria removal, ultra-fine precipitates

If you're unsure, start with G4 — it works well for most micro filtration applications.

IV. Material & Workmanship

The micro fritted funnel and filter flask are made from borosilicate glass 3.3 — chemically resistant and transparent. The sintered frit is formed by high-temperature sintering of glass powder — uniform pores, durable, and non-shedding. The internal surfaces are smooth, connections are designed to minimize dead volume — this is the key difference between micro and regular filtration setups.

Manufactured to industry standards — you can count on it.

Applications

Typical Applications

Bioactive Compound Isolation

Micro-scale separation and clarification of enzymes, antibodies, and proteins

Nucleic Acid Purification

Removing impurities from DNA/RNA extracts

Protein Solution Clarification

Removing insoluble aggregates from protein solutions

Microsphere / Microcarrier Collection

Collecting microspheres or microcarriers in bioprocessing

Precious Sample Filtration

Any small-volume sample you can't afford to lose

Suitable Conditions

  • Sample volume between 0.1~5ml
  • Sample is precious or limited — can't tolerate losses from regular filtration
  • Requires sterile operation or use in a laminar flow hood — compact size fits easily in hoods
  • Not for large volumes — if your sample is over 10ml, consider regular vacuum filtration

Operation & Maintenance

User Guide

Micro filtration is similar to regular vacuum filtration, but there are some details to watch — sample volumes are small, so there's less room for error.

03

I. Before You Start

  • Check the fritted funnel for cracks — cracked glass is not safe under vacuum
  • Make sure the seal ring is intact and properly positioned — leaks kill vacuum
  • Check the hand vacuum pump for leaks
  • Consider whether your sample needs pre-treatment (dilution, centrifugation to remove large particles)
04

Assembly sequence

  1. Fit the seal ring onto the funnel stem
  2. Insert the funnel into the filter flask mouth and press down gently to seal
  3. Connect the flask side arm to the hand vacuum pump with silicone tubing
  4. Check all connections for leaks
05

III. Filtration Operation

  • Add sample to the funnel — each pour should not exceed 2/3 of the funnel capacity (about 10ml)
  • Pull vacuum slowly and gently with the hand pump — don't pull too hard, or the sample will be forced through too quickly and may pass the frit without effective separation
  • Watch the filtrate flow into the flask and adjust pumping frequency to maintain steady flow
  • After filtration is complete, release the vacuum first (open the vent or disconnect the tubing) — then stop pumping
  • Release vacuum first, then stop pumping — same rule as regular vacuum filtration
06

IV. Collecting Filtrate & Cleaning

  • After filtration, remove the funnel from the flask
  • If the filtrate is what you need, use a pipette or dropper to withdraw it from the top of the flask (not the side arm)
  • If the residue is what you need, rinse the funnel with a small amount of solvent and collect the wash
  • Clean the fritted funnel: rinse with solvent, then use back-flushing — push solvent from the bottom up to dislodge particles trapped in the frit
  • For stubborn clogs, soak the funnel in an appropriate cleaning solution overnight (the solution depends on what your sample is)

📌 Hand Vacuum Pump Tips:

You don't need to pump continuously — a few pumps create vacuum, and the check valve holds it. Just top up the vacuum when it drops.
If filtration is unusually slow, check: ① Is the frit clogged? ② Is the seal ring leaking? ③ Is your sample too viscous?

💡 From a Seasoned Lab Hand:

The essence of micro filtration is "go slow" — slow pumping, slow sample addition, slow observation. Small samples can't handle rushing — taking it slow actually gives you better results.
Frit clogged? Back-flushing is the most effective method — push solvent up from the bottom to dislodge trapped particles. If that doesn't work, try ultrasonic cleaning (check if your frit is compatible with sonication first — some aren't).
Dead volume is low but not zero — if your filtrate volume is very small, rinse the funnel with a small amount of solvent and pull it through to recover whatever's left in the dead volume.

⚠️ Safety & Compliance Checklist

Hand vacuum pump is not a vacuum cleaner

It's for air only — don't pull liquid into it

Glassware is small but still glass

Handle carefully — don't drop it

Biosafety when handling biological samples

Dispose of waste and contaminated materials according to regulations

Do not
  • Never scrape the frit with hard objects: Use soft brushes or solvent rinses — wire or metal objects will damage the frit
