Product Description

I. What Is the Microscale Synthesis Kit

The microscale synthesis kit is a complete toolset for microscale organic synthesis. It includes the most commonly used components — reaction vials, condensers, connectors, and flasks — all with 14/10 standard joints for complete interchangeability. Open the case and you can assemble apparatus for reflux, distillation, inert gas protection, and more.

Unlike standard-scale synthesis, microscale synthesis uses milligrams and microliters — less reagent, shorter reaction times, and less waste. This kit is optimized for microscale work with appropriately sized glassware and connections to minimize holdup volume.

✦ Advantages of Microscale Synthesis:

① Reagent savings — milligram-scale reactions make expensive reagents affordable
② Faster reactions — efficient heat and mass transfer in small volumes
③ Safer — smaller exotherms, less hazardous waste
④ Greener — reduced waste generation
⑤ Ideal for screening — saves significant time and resources

II. Kit Contents

This kit includes the following core components:

  • Micro Reaction Vials (2ml × 3, 5ml × 3) — Main reaction vessels, with 14/10 joints
  • Micro Jacketed Condenser × 1 — Water-cooled reflux
  • Micro Air Reflux Condenser × 1 — Simple reflux, no water needed
  • Micro Connectors × 5 — Various angles for connecting vials and condensers
  • Micro Flasks (10ml × 2) — For distillation or receiving
  • Foam-Lined Storage Case × 1 — Dedicated slots for every component

III. Jacketed vs Air Condenser

  • Jacketed Condenser (water-cooled) — For reflux and distillation; higher cooling efficiency; suitable for medium-boiling solvents (60–150℃)
  • Air Condenser (no water) — For high-boiling solvents (>150℃); air cooling prevents thermal stress cracking from water-cooling temperature differences

IV. Material & Workmanship

All glass components are manufactured from borosilicate glass 3.3 — chemically resistant and thermally shock-resistant. 14/10 standard joints are precision-machined for reliable sealing. Vials have uniform wall thickness for even heating. The foam-lined storage case provides dedicated slots for every component — easy access, secure storage, and protection from damage.

Operation & Maintenance

User Guide

The key to the microscale synthesis kit is flexible assembly — choose the right components for your reaction type. Here are common assembly examples.

🚨 Three rules to remember:
① Align all joints properly — misalignment causes leaks or joint damage
② Heat slowly — bumping in micro samples means total loss
③ Clean immediately after use — residues in micro glassware are extremely difficult to remove once dry

03

I. Before You Start

  • Check all glass components for cracks — cracked glass is unsafe
  • Check that joints are clean — residues affect sealing
  • Confirm all components are in the storage case — each slot corresponds to one piece
  • Prepare heating block and magnetic stirrer (if needed)
04

Micro Reflux Setup

  1. Add sample and stir bar to reaction vial (2ml or 5ml)
  2. Connect the jacketed condenser via a connector
  3. Keep the condenser top open
  4. Heat with the heating block with magnetic stirring
05

High-Boiling Reflux (Air Condenser)

  1. Add sample to reaction vial
  2. Connect the air reflux condenser via a connector
  3. Keep the condenser top open
  4. Heat with the heating block — no cooling water needed
06

Inert Gas Protection Reaction

  1. Add sample to reaction vial
  2. Connect the jacketed condenser via a connector
  3. Introduce nitrogen or argon through the condenser top
  4. Maintain positive pressure
06

III. Reaction Control

  • Heat slowly with the heating block — micro samples bump easily and total loss is the consequence
  • Once reflux is stable, watch the condensation ring in the condenser — its position reflects reflux intensity
  • Reaction time is typically 1–6 hours (faster than standard-scale reactions)
  • Sample periodically — use a pipette to withdraw a few microliters for analysis
06

IV. Shutdown & Cleaning

  • Turn off the heat first — allow the apparatus to cool naturally
  • Disassemble once cooled to room temperature
  • Clean immediately — residues in micro glassware are extremely difficult to remove once dry
  • Dry components and return to their designated slots in the storage case
  • Check that all components are present — each slot corresponds to one component

📌 Component Selection Tips:

① Solvent boiling point below 150℃ — use jacketed condenser with cooling water
② Solvent boiling point above 150℃ — use air condenser (prevents cracking from thermal shock)
③ Need inert gas protection — jacketed condenser (easier to introduce gas from the top)
④ Connector angle: Straight connector for simple reflux; angled connectors for distillation or separatory setups

💡 From a Seasoned Lab Hand:

"The essence of microscale synthesis is 'less is more' — less reagent, less solvent, less time, but not less yield."
Stir bar selection: 2ml vials use micro stir bars (5×2mm); 5ml vials use standard micro stir bars (10×3mm) — too large and they won't spin; too small and they won't mix.
Heating block temperature: Set the block 20–30℃ above the solvent boiling point. Don't place the flask directly on the block — use a layer of aluminum foil or glass wool for even heating.
Workup: Microscale workup is also microscale — use micro pipettes for transfers, micro centrifuge tubes for collection, and a micro rotary evaporator for concentration.

⚠️ Safety & Compliance Checklist

Work in a fume hood

— even small amounts of organic vapor are hazardous

NO open flame when heating flammable solvents

— use a heating block

Don't force joints

— micro glassware has thinner walls and is more fragile

The condenser top must remain open

— sealed systems will explode when heated

Do not
  • Never use cracked glassware
