Product Description

The standard joint spherical separatory funnel is the most commonly used liquid-liquid extraction and separation device in the laboratory. Its spherical body design provides larger volume and more thorough mixing for efficient extraction. Compared to pear-shaped separatory funnels, the spherical design has a larger diameter, making it easier to shake and mix liquids, resulting in faster extraction. The upper port features a ground glass or PTFE stopper, and the lower port has a standard 1:10 taper ground glass joint with a two-way glass or PTFE stopcock for flow control.

Key Features

  • Borosilicate Glass 3.3: ISO 3585 compliant, low expansion, thermal shock 280°C
  • Spherical Body: Larger diameter for thorough mixing and faster extraction
  • Standard Joint: 1:10 taper, precision ground for reliable sealing
  • Two Stopcock Options: Glass and PTFE for different applications
  • Multiple Sizes: DIN (EU) 14/20 ~ 45/50 and ASTM equivalents
  • Multiple Capacities: 10ml ~ 20000ml full range
  • High Transparency: Easy observation of layer separation
  • Chemical Resistant: Suitable for various organic solvents

Quality Assurance

Every separatory funnel undergoes strict dimensional inspection, joint taper testing, and thermal resistance testing to ensure compliance with applicable standards.

Note: Ensure joints and stopcock are clean and dry before use. Glass stopcocks require a small amount of vacuum grease; PTFE stopcocks require no grease. Large capacity models (5000ml and above) should be secured with a support stand. Always vent pressure during shaking.

Applications

Typical Applications

Liquid-Liquid Extraction

Organic/aqueous phase extraction and separation

Organic Synthesis

Post-reaction workup, product extraction purification

Pharmaceutical R&D

API extraction, impurity separation

Environmental Monitoring

Organic pollutant extraction from water samples

Food Testing

Oil, grease, and additive extraction from food

Education

University chemistry and pharmaceutical lab teaching

Typical Apparatus Assembly

Upper port → Glass stopper / PTFE stopper

Lower port → Receiving flask / Erlenmeyer flask

Stopcock → Flow control for separation

Tip: The spherical separatory funnel is the core equipment for liquid-liquid extraction. The spherical body provides larger mixing space and faster extraction. Use accessories of the same joint size for optimal sealing. Always vent pressure during shaking.

Std Joint Separatory Funnel · Selection Guide

Select the right configuration based on your experimental needs:

📌 General Extraction
For most liquid-liquid extraction and separation operations with moderate corrosion resistance requirements.
Recommended: Glass Stopcock · 24/40 · 125ml / 250ml / 500ml
🧪 Strong Acid/Base Systems
For strong acid, base, or corrosive system extraction.
Recommended: PTFE Stopcock + PTFE Stopper · 24/40 · 250ml / 500ml
🔬 Micro/Small Scale
For limited sample volume micro-extraction operations.
Recommended: Glass or PTFE Stopcock · 14/20 · 10ml / 25ml / 60ml
🏭 Pilot / Large Scale
For large-volume sample extraction and separation.
Recommended: Glass or PTFE Stopcock · 29/32 · 3000ml / 5000ml
🏗️ Industrial Scale
For ultra-large volume sample extraction and separation.
Recommended: PTFE Stopcock · 45/40 · 10000ml / 20000ml
🔀 Easy Grip Design
For frequent operation requiring comfortable grip and handling.
Recommended: Easy-Grip Spherical Separatory Funnel

Selection Tip: Recommendations are for common scenarios. For actual selection, consider sample volume, solvent properties, and extraction efficiency requirements. Spherical separatory funnels provide faster mixing due to their larger diameter. Large capacity models (5000ml and above) should be secured with a support stand. Operation & Maintenance

User Guide

03

Preparation

  • Inspect funnel for cracks, chips, or scratched joints
  • Clean all joint surfaces with a soft cloth or cotton swab
  • Check stopcock rotation; glass stopcock may need a small amount of vacuum grease
  • PTFE stopcock requires no grease; check O-ring integrity
  • Ensure top stopper seals properly
04

Installation & Connection

  • Secure the funnel with a support stand and clamp, ensure vertical stability
  • Large capacity models (5000ml and above) require specialized clamps
  • Lower joint can connect to a receiving flask or be used for direct drainage
  • Confirm stopcock is closed before adding liquids
05

Extraction & Separation Operation

  • Add liquid and extraction solvent through the upper port
  • Secure the top stopper and shake the funnel thoroughly
  • Vent regularly during shaking (invert funnel, open stopcock to release pressure)
  • Place the funnel vertically and allow liquids to separate completely
  • Slowly open the stopcock to drain the lower layer
  • Pour the upper layer from the top
  • For large capacities, control drainage rate to prevent splashing
06

Disassembly & Cleaning

  • Clean immediately after use to prevent residue buildup
  • Wash joints with soft brush and detergent, avoid hard objects
  • Glass stopcock can be cleaned with organic solvents
  • PTFE stopcock can be cleaned with organic solvents; maintain O-ring
  • Air dry after washing, store with soft paper between joints

Safety Tips

  • Ensure proper ventilation and fire safety when extracting flammable solvents
  • Vent regularly during shaking to prevent pressure buildup and splashing
  • PTFE stopcock maximum operating temperature: 250°C
  • Large capacity models (5000ml and above) must be secured with a support stand
  • Always work in a fume hood when handling hazardous chemicals
Do not
  • Do not use cracked or chipped separatory funnels for experiments
