Vigreux Column

100mm ~ 1000mm · Various Configurations & Joint Sizes

The Vigreux column (fractionating column) is a core component for precise fractionation in standard joint glassware. Manufactured from high-quality borosilicate glass 3.3 (ISO 3585), its inner wall features evenly distributed downward-angled indentations that significantly increase vapor-liquid contact area for enhanced separation efficiency. Available in plain, side-arm, jacketed, and jacketed side-arm configurations to meet various fractionation needs. The standard 1:10 taper ground glass joint ensures reliable sealing and interchangeability with all standard joint accessories. Available in 14#, 19#, 24#, 29# joint sizes with effective lengths up to 1000mm.

Configuration Selection Guide:
Plain: General fractionation, no sampling or temperature control needed.
Side-Arm: Sampling during fractionation to monitor purity.
Jacketed: Temperature control for high-boiling or low-boiling distillations; jacket ports connect to circulating bath (same as condenser).
Jacketed Side-Arm: Combined temperature control and sampling.

Product Description

The Vigreux column (fractionating column) is an essential component for precise fractionation in standard joint glassware. Its inner wall features evenly distributed downward-angled indentations that create a large surface area for vapor-liquid exchange, significantly improving separation efficiency. Compared to packed columns, the Vigreux column requires no packing material, is easy to clean, and has low pressure drop, making it the ideal choice for laboratory fractionation.

Available Configurations

  • Plain Vigreux Column: Standard single-wall column with Vigreux indentations for general fractionation
  • Side-Arm Vigreux Column: Plain column with a side-arm (standard joint) for sampling or accessory connection
  • Jacketed Vigreux Column: Double-wall with jacket. Jacket has inlet/outlet ports (same as condenser jacket) for circulating heating oil/water or cooling fluid.
  • Jacketed Side-Arm Vigreux Column: Jacketed column with side-arm for combined temperature control and sampling.

Key Features

  • Borosilicate Glass 3.3: ISO 3585 compliant, low expansion, thermal shock 280°C
  • Vigreux Indentations: Maximized vapor-liquid contact for high separation efficiency
  • Multiple Configurations: Plain, side-arm, jacketed, jacketed side-arm
  • Standard Joint: 1:10 taper, precision ground for reliable sealing
  • Multiple Sizes: Available in 14#, 19#, 24#, 29# joint sizes
  • Multiple Lengths: 100mm ~ 1000mm effective lengths
  • High Transparency: Easy observation of fractionation progress
  • Chemical Resistant: Suitable for various organic solvents
  • No Packing Required: Easy to clean, low pressure drop
  • Jacket Design: Inlet/outlet ports (same as condenser jacket) for circulating heating or cooling media

Quality Assurance

Every Vigreux column undergoes strict dimensional inspection, joint taper testing, and thermal resistance testing to ensure compliance with applicable standards.

Note: Ensure joints are clean and dry before use to prevent sticking. For jacketed models, confirm jacket connections are secure before use. Use accessories of the same joint size for optimal sealing.

Applications

Typical Applications

Precise Fractionation

Separation of close-boiling liquid mixtures

Solvent Purification

High-purity solvent distillation

Natural Product Extraction

Essential oils, fragrance fractionation

Pharmaceutical R&D

Intermediate purification, chiral separation

Education

University organic chemistry and chemical engineering teaching

Compatible Equipment

Standard joint round-bottom flasks, three-neck flasks

Distillation heads, condensers

Heating mantles, oil baths

Circulating water/oil baths (for jacketed models)

Tip: Separation efficiency increases with indentation density and column length. High density is recommended for demanding separations, longer columns for wide-boiling-range mixtures. Use accessories of the same joint size for optimal sealing.

Operation & Maintenance

User Guide

03

Preparation

  • Inspect column for cracks, chips, or scratched joints
  • Clean joint surfaces with a soft cloth or cotton swab
  • Apply a small amount of vacuum grease if joints are too tight
  • For jacketed models, inspect jacket ports for integrity
04

Installation & Connection

  • Connect the column to the distillation flask via the joint
  • Attach the distillation head or condenser to the top
  • Insert with gentle twisting motion, do not force
  • Secure the column with a clamp, ensure vertical stability
  • Jacketed models: Connect heating/cooling media lines, lower inlet → upper outlet
05

Fractionation Operation

  • Begin heating, slowly raise to boiling temperature
  • Observe vapor rise within the column
  • Adjust heating power, control reflux ratio (recommended 3:1 ~ 10:1)
  • Side-arm models: sample through side-arm to monitor fraction purity
  • Jacketed models: Hot water/oil for high-boiling; coolant for low-boiling
  • Record fraction collection volumes at each temperature range
06

Disassembly & Cleaning

  • Stop heating first, allow system to cool
  • Turn off heating/cooling media
  • Gently twist to detach the column
  • Clean immediately after use to prevent residue buildup
  • Wash joints with soft brush and detergent, avoid hard objects
  • Clean Vigreux indentations with a long-handled soft brush
  • For jacketed models, clean jacket interior thoroughly
  • Air dry after washing, store with soft paper between joints

Safety Tips

  • Control temperature carefully when distilling flammable solvents
  • For jacketed models with hot oil, ensure temperature does not exceed glass tolerance
  • Always work in a fume hood when handling hazardous chemicals
Do not
  • Do not use cracked or chipped columns for experiments
