Scissors & Dissecting Instruments

Medical Stainless Steel · Straight / Curved / Dissecting · Smooth Action

Laboratory scissors and dissecting instruments cut samples to size, trim filter paper and sealing film, and separate plant or animal tissue. Bodies are medical stainless steel with heat-treated, precision-ground edges that cut cleanly and keep their sharpness; curved and dissecting patterns work inside containers or close to tissue without blocking the view.

Product Description

1. Overview

Laboratory scissors cut solid samples, trim filter paper and sealing film, and handle fibres and films. Edges are heat treated for hardness and then ground to a sharp, durable cutting face that resists rolling over in long service.

Straight scissors handle general bench cutting. Curved blades sweep upward so cutting inside a container or along a flat surface does not require lifting the wrist. Dissecting scissors have long, fine points for delicate separation, and blunt-tip dressing scissors open packaging without stabbing the contents.

Made from medical stainless steel, they can be autoclaved and reused, which suits applications with higher cleanliness demands. Handles are usually single or double ring, keeping the hand comfortable in long sessions.

🔬 Types & Features:
Straight — direct cutting on the bench.
Curved — upward sweep for in-container and surface cutting.
Dissecting — long fine points for delicate separation.
Blunt tip — opens packaging without damaging contents.

2. Key Parameters

  • Material: medical stainless steel (420 edge steel)
  • Types: straight / curved / dissecting / fine-point / dressing
  • Blade lengths: 40 / 50 / 60 / 70 / 90 mm
  • Overall lengths: 120 / 140 / 160 / 180 mm
  • Sterilisation: autoclavable
  • Applications: cutting samples, filter paper, dissection

3. Material & Workmanship

Bodies are medical stainless steel with heat-treated, ground edges that balance hardness and toughness. The pivot is closely fitted so the blades open and close without play and do not loosen in long service.

Handling tip: do not cut wire or hard materials, which chip the edge. Rinse and dry after use and apply a thin anti-rust film during long storage.

Applications

Typical Uses

Selection Guide

Select by task

TaskSuggested typeNotes
Filter paper, sealing filmStraightAccurate straight cuts
Cutting inside a vesselCurvedUpward sweep clears the vessel wall

💡 Tips: Dedicated pairs — keep one pair for filter paper and another for samples.
No hard materials — wire and hard stock chip the edge.
Clean promptly — rinse and dry after corrosive samples.
Occasional oil — a little lubricant at the pivot keeps the action smooth.

Operation & Maintenance

Operation Guide

Sharp edges do not tolerate hard materials. Correct use and care keep both the edge and the cutting accuracy for longer.

03

Before Use

  • Check the edges for chips and the pivot for looseness
  • Confirm the scissors are clean from the previous use
  • Select the pattern to suit the task
  • Sterilise first where aseptic work is required
  • Have a dedicated tray ready
04

Procedure

  1. Place the thumb and ring finger in the loops with the index finger on the shank
  2. Position the material between the blades, cutting near the pivot for more leverage
  3. Close the handles evenly without twisting side to side
  4. For curved cuts, advance in several short strokes rather than one forced cut
  5. Clear residues from the edges straight away
  6. Clean, dry and return the scissors to the tray
05

Cleaning & Care

  • Rinse with water and dry with a soft cloth
  • Rinse immediately after corrosive samples
  • Add a little lubricant at the pivot to keep the action smooth
  • Touch up the edge with a fine stone where facilities allow
  • Apply a thin anti-rust film during long storage

💡 Lab veteran tips: Cut near the pivot — more leverage and even load on the edge.
Do not twist — twisting rubs the blades together and wears them.
Short strokes on curves — one long forced cut tends to tear the material.
Wipe straight away — dried residues are hard to remove and may corrode the edge.

⚠️ Safety Notes

Sharp edges

keep fingers clear when handling and storing

No hard materials

wire and glass fibre chip the edge and may fly

Sterilisation

follow the autoclave procedure for the instrument

Dedicated use

keep dissecting scissors separate from other tasks

Store promptly

return scissors to the tray, not loose on the bench
