Spring Clamp & Pinchcock

Controlled Grip · Tubing Flow Control · No Tube Damage · Multiple Types

Spring clamps and pinchcocks grip rubber and silicone tubing to stop or regulate liquid and gas flow. The clamping force is controlled so the line closes fully without crushing the wall, and the metal parts are rust protected so they do not seize in humid, reagent-laden air.

Product Description

1. Overview

Spring clamps and pinchcocks are basic items for controlling tubing lines. Clamping down on rubber or silicone tubing stops liquid or gas flow; releasing it restores the line. They are commonly used on burettes, wash bottles and gas generation set-ups.

In type, spring clamps rely on spring tension and open one-handed for quick changes; pinchcocks use a screw so the grip can be turned down in small steps for near-continuous flow regulation; hose clamps suit larger bore lines or where more force is needed.

Jaw edges are rounded so closing does not cut or crush the tubing. Metal parts are galvanised or otherwise rust protected, so long exposure to humid air and reagent vapour does not cause seizing, and the springs resist fatigue.

🔬 Types & Features:
Spring clamp — one-handed operation for fast shut-off.
Screw pinchcock — fine adjustment for near-continuous flow control.
No tube damage — rounded edges do not cut the tubing.
Rust protected — resists seizing in humid conditions.

2. Key Parameters

  • Types: spring clamp / pinchcock / screw clamp / hose clamp
  • Material: galvanised or spring steel
  • Tube sizes: 6 / 8 / 10 / 12 / 15 mm
  • Action: one-handed spring or adjustable screw
  • Finish: galvanised and rust protected
  • Applications: controlling rubber and silicone tubing lines

3. Material & Workmanship

Bodies are formed from spring or plain steel and galvanised for rust protection. Springs are heat treated to hold tension over long use. Jaw edges are rounded to avoid shearing the tubing.

Handling tip: choose a size to suit the tube outer diameter and clamp on a straight run away from weak spots; a screw pinchcock can be adjusted in small steps for approximate flow control.

Applications

Typical Uses

Titration control

clamping the lower tubing to set the drip rate

Wash bottles

controlling the outlet flow

closing a line to hold or release vacuum

Industries

  • Chemical analysis routine flow control and titration support
  • Pharmaceutical R&D line control in pilot set-ups
  • Biology flow control for media and buffers
  • Teaching laboratories demonstrating flow control principles
  • Environmental monitoring switching sampling lines on and off

Selection Guide

Select by tubing requirement

RequirementSuggested typeNotes
Fast shut-offSpring clampOne-handed and immediate
Fine flow adjustmentScrew pinchcockScrew gives small continuous steps
Larger bore (over 15mm)Hose clampGreater clamping force
Long closed periodsScrew pinchcockLocked position does not spring back

💡 Tips: Match the tube — the clamp should be slightly smaller than the tube outer diameter to close it.
Avoid joints — do not clamp over a tube-to-connector joint.
Do not over-tighten — a screw clamp should not be turned fully home.
Replace in time — retire clamps whose spring tension has clearly dropped.

Operation & Maintenance

Operation Guide

Spring clamps and pinchcocks are simple, but choosing the right size and clamping point decides whether the experiment runs smoothly.

03

Before Use

  • Confirm the tube outer diameter suits the clamp size
  • Check the spring tension and that the jaws are not deformed
  • Check that the screw turns freely without binding
  • Confirm the clamp is clean with no residues
  • Plan the clamping point, avoiding joints
04

Procedure

  1. Fit the tubing over the connector or line and confirm it is secure
  2. Spring clamp: squeeze both sides to open, fit over the tube and release
  3. Screw pinchcock: fit it, then turn the screw down gradually to the required state
  4. Confirm the line is closed by watching that liquid or gas flow stops
  5. To regulate flow, turn the screw slowly in small steps
  6. Release the clamp after use to restore the line
  7. Wipe dry and put the clamp away
05

Cleaning & Care

  • Wipe water and reagent residues off the clamp after use
  • Dry promptly so the galvanising is not wet for long periods
  • Add a little lubricant to the spring to keep it free
  • Clean and lightly oil the screw thread
  • Store dry and avoid loads that deform the jaws

💡 Lab veteran tips: Clamp a straight run — away from joints for a reliable seal.
Release before moving — open the clamp before repositioning to avoid scraping the tube.
Adjust slowly — rapid turning on a screw type changes the grip abruptly.
Check tension — a softened spring will not close the line fully.

⚠️ Safety Notes

Size matching

a mismatched clamp will not seal or will crush the tube

Corrosive media

rinse and dry immediately after contact

Pressurised lines

confirm the line pressure rating before clamping closed

Periodic checks

replace clamps whose spring tension has dropped

Do not
  • No over-tightening: do not turn a screw pinchcock fully home
