Spatulas & Sampling Tools

Single / Double-Ended · Multiple Bowl Sizes · Stainless or Plastic

Spatulas and sampling tools take, transfer and weigh solid powders, granules and crystals. Bowl sizes and shapes vary: small bowls suit micro sampling and weighing, larger bowls handle batch transfer, and a double-ended spoon-and-scraper design does both jobs. Stainless steel resists corrosion and heat, while plastic will not scratch containers.

Product Description

1. Overview

A spatula is the basic tool for taking solid reagents. Bowls come in several capacities: small bowls handle micro sampling without taking too much reagent at once, while larger bowls transfer in batches for efficiency.

The double-ended design has a spoon at one end and a scraper at the other, so powder and granules are taken with the spoon while the scraper lifts caked material, levels a sample, or recovers reagent from the bottom of a bottle. Micro spoons have a very small bowl for milligram weighing.

In material terms, stainless spatulas resist corrosion and heat, clean up and can be reused for routine reagents; plastic spatulas have a soft surface that will not scratch the inside of glass vessels or a mortar, which suits delicate containers or where metal ions must be avoided.

🔬 Types & Features:
Double-ended — spoon one end, scraper the other.
Many bowl sizes — 0.5 to 5mL covers micro to batch work.
Stainless — corrosion and heat resistant and reusable.
Plastic — will not scratch glass vessels or mortars.

2. Key Parameters

  • Types: single spoon / double-ended / micro spoon / scraper
  • Material: stainless steel (304 / 316) or PP plastic
  • Bowl capacity: 0.5 / 1 / 2 / 3 / 5 mL
  • Lengths: 120 / 150 / 180 / 210 mm
  • Design: combined spoon and scraper or single spoon
  • Applications: taking, transferring and weighing solids

3. Material & Workmanship

Stainless versions are pressed from 304 or 316 stainless steel and polished with rounded edges that will not cut. Plastic versions are moulded from PP with a smooth, tough surface that resists breaking and does not scratch containers.

Handling tip: change or clean the spatula between different reagents to avoid carry-over; for strongly corrosive media choose 316 stainless or a dedicated plastic spoon.

Applications

Typical Uses

Reagent handling

taking powders and granules from bottles

Weighing

transferring to weighing paper or a weighing bottle

Sample transfer

moving solids into beakers or crucibles

Recovering residues

scraping the bottom of a bottle with the scraper end

Industries

  • Chemical analysis taking and weighing solid reagents
  • Pharmaceutical R&D sampling and compounding raw materials
  • Food testing sampling and portioning powders
  • Materials research handling and transferring powders
  • Teaching laboratories demonstrating correct reagent handling

Selection Guide

Select by sample size

ScenarioSuggested bowlNotes

💡 Tips: Dedicated tools — use a separate spatula per reagent to avoid carry-over.
Delicate containers — choose plastic for mortars and plastic vessels.
Corrosive reagents — prefer 316 stainless or plastic.
Rinse promptly — dried caked residues are hard to remove and contaminate the next sample.

Operation & Maintenance

Operation Guide

A spatula is small, but dosing control and carry-over both start here. The steps below cover routine use.

03

Before Use

  • Confirm the spatula is clean and dry with no residue from the previous user
  • Choose a bowl capacity to suit the sample size
  • Choose stainless or plastic to suit the reagent
  • Check the container mouth will take the spatula
  • Have weighing paper or a weighing bottle ready
04

Procedure

  1. Take the spatula and check the bowl is undistorted and clean
  2. Lower the bowl into the reagent bottle without touching the walls
  3. Lift out and shake gently so excess powder falls back into the bottle
  4. Transfer the sample to the weighing paper or container
  5. Use the scraper end where residue must be recovered
  6. Clean and dry the spatula immediately, or use a fresh one
  7. Replace the bottle cap to keep the reagent from taking up moisture
05

Cleaning & Care

  • Clean immediately so residues do not cake on
  • Wash stainless spatulas with water and a mild detergent
  • Rinse with solvent and dry to prevent rust
  • Do not expose plastic spatulas to high temperature
  • Store dry without pressing spoons against each other

💡 Lab veteran tips: Take a little — it is cleaner to take less and top up than to tip excess back.
Avoid the walls — scraping the bottle wall introduces contamination.
Shake back — return excess powder to the bottle to reduce waste.
Dedicated spoons — keep a separate spatula for hygroscopic reagents and seal promptly.

⚠️ Safety Notes

Carry-over

change or thoroughly clean the spatula between reagents

Corrosion

rinse immediately after contact with strong acids or alkalis

Container care

use plastic spatulas in delicate vessels

Dust

wear a mask and work in a ventilated area when weighing fine powders

Do not
  • Dedicated use: do not use reagent spatulas for other purposes
