Product Description
1. Overview
Cotton wool and protective aids are basic lab consumables. Degreased cotton is boiled in alkali, rinsed and bleached, which markedly raises its absorbency and wicking action, so it is used for packing, filter backing, absorbing spills and wiping; gauze is soft and breathable, used for padding, covering and basic protection.
The absorbency of degreased cotton comes from the surface treatment: with the waxes and oils removed, water spreads quickly along the fibres for good capillary uptake. Gauze is a loose weave of cotton yarn, breathable and soft, and can be cut to the size needed.
Selection comes down to use and form. Packing and absorbing favour cotton rolls or balls; backing and covering favour gauze rolls or squares. In the lab, keep the packaging clean and dry and reseal after taking what is needed to avoid damp and contamination.
🔬 Types & Features:
Absorbs fast — degreased fibres take up spills quickly.
Clean fibres — sheds little, suited to wiping and backing.
Soft and breathable — loose gauze for covering and padding.
Many forms — cotton rolls, balls, gauze rolls and squares.

3. Material & Workmanship
Degreased cotton is made from natural cotton fibre that is boiled in alkali, rinsed and bleached to remove surface waxes and oils, which markedly raises absorbency. Gauze is woven from cotton yarn and is soft and breathable.
Handling tip: reseal after taking what is needed to keep the packaging clean and dry, and when backing a filter check the cut edges for loose fibres, wrapping in gauze if necessary.
