Product Description

The cold finger condenser (also known as cold trap condenser) is a specialized condensation device in standard joint glassware. Its unique cold finger design allows filling with cooling media such as ice water, dry ice-acetone, or liquid nitrogen for maximum condensation efficiency. Unlike traditional water-jacketed condensers, the cold finger condenser relies on internal cooling media to directly absorb heat, making it ideal for high-vacuum systems, sublimation purification, freeze-drying, and low-boiling solvent recovery. Equipped with a drip tip for convenient condensate collection.

Key Features

  • Borosilicate Glass 3.3: ISO 3585 compliant, low expansion, thermal shock 280°C
  • Cold Finger Design: Hollow interior for cooling media (ice water, dry ice-acetone, liquid nitrogen)
  • Drip Tip: Enables convenient condensate collection
  • Standard Joint: 1:10 taper, precision ground for reliable sealing
  • Multiple Sizes: Available in 14#, 19#, 24#, 29# joint sizes
  • High Transparency: Easy observation of condensation/sublimation
  • Chemical Resistant: Suitable for various organic solvents
  • Vacuum Compatible: Suitable for high-vacuum systems

Quality Assurance

Every condenser undergoes strict dimensional inspection, joint taper testing, and thermal resistance testing to ensure compliance with applicable standards.

Note: Ensure joints are clean and dry before use to prevent sticking. Different cooling media can be used based on experimental requirements. When using dry ice-acetone or liquid nitrogen, take proper safety precautions.

Applications

Typical Applications

Sublimation Purification

Solid sample purification (e.g., caffeine, camphor)

Freeze-Drying

Vacuum freeze-drying of biological samples

Low-Boiling Solvent Condensation

Ether, dichloromethane recovery

High-Vacuum Distillation

Vacuum system integration

Volatile Sample Collection

Volatile organic compound collection

Education

University organic and physical chemistry teaching

Compatible Equipment

Standard joint round-bottom flasks, three-neck flasks

Vacuum systems (vacuum pumps, vacuum lines)

Sublimation apparatus, freeze dryers

Tip: The cold finger condenser is the preferred condensation device for sublimation and freeze-drying. Condensation temperature can be adjusted by selecting appropriate cooling media (ice water, dry ice-acetone, liquid nitrogen). Use accessories of the same joint size for optimal sealing.

Operation & Maintenance

User Guide

03

Preparation

  • Inspect condenser for cracks, chips, or scratched joints
  • Clean joint surfaces with a soft cloth or cotton swab
  • Apply a small amount of vacuum grease if joints are too tight
  • Prepare appropriate cooling media based on experimental requirements
04

Cooling Media Selection

  • Ice Water (0°C): Standard condensation, low-boiling solvent recovery
  • Ice-Salt Bath (-5°C ~ -20°C): Moderate temperature condensation
  • Dry Ice-Acetone (-78°C): Sublimation purification, high-vacuum condensation
  • Liquid Nitrogen (-196°C): Ultra-low temperature condensation, volatile sample collection
05

Installation & Connection

  • Connect the cold finger vertically to the flask or reactor via the joint
  • Insert with gentle twisting motion, do not force
  • Secure the condenser with a clamp for vertical stability
  • For vacuum operations, ensure all joints are well sealed
06

Condensation/Sublimation Operation

  • Fill the cold finger with cooling media (about 2/3 capacity)
  • Begin heating or vacuum, observe condensation/sublimation progress
  • Collect condensate through the drip tip promptly
  • Replenish or replace cooling media as needed
06

Disassembly & Cleaning

  • Stop heating or turn off vacuum system first
  • Allow cold finger to return to room temperature, then discard residual coolant
  • Gently twist to detach the condenser
  • Clean immediately after use to prevent residue buildup
  • Wash joints with soft brush and detergent, avoid hard objects
  • Air dry after washing, store with soft paper between joints

Safety Tips

  • When using dry ice-acetone or liquid nitrogen, wear cryogenic gloves and safety goggles
  • Ensure proper ventilation when using liquid nitrogen to prevent oxygen deficiency
  • Ensure all joints are well sealed for high-vacuum operations
  • Always work in a fume hood when handling hazardous chemicals
Do not
  • Do not use cracked or chipped condensers for experiments
  • Do not fill cooling media beyond 2/3 capacity to prevent expansion overflow
