Fractionating Head

14/23 ~ 60/45 · Vigreux Type · Various Joint Sizes

The fractionating head is a core connecting component in standard joint fractionation apparatus. Manufactured from high-quality borosilicate glass 3.3 (ISO 3585), it features built-in Vigreux indentations that increase vapor-liquid contact area for enhanced separation efficiency. Combining the functions of a fractionating column and a distillation head in one compact unit, it is the ideal choice for precise fractionation. The standard 1:10 taper ground glass joint ensures reliable sealing and interchangeability with all standard joint accessories. DIN (EU) and ASTM joint sizes are both available. Widely used in organic synthesis, solvent purification, and natural product extraction.

Product Description

The fractionating head is a core connecting component in standard joint fractionation apparatus, combining the functions of a fractionating column and a distillation head in one compact unit. Built-in Vigreux indentations allow rising vapor and reflux liquid to make full contact on the indentation surfaces, achieving efficient vapor-liquid exchange and significantly improving separation efficiency. Compared to standard distillation heads, the fractionating head provides additional separation capability during distillation, making it the ideal choice for precise fractionation. Manufactured from borosilicate glass 3.3, it offers excellent thermal and chemical resistance for various organic solvent fractionation applications. The standard 1:10 taper ground glass joint ensures reliable sealing and interchangeability with all standard joint accessories. DIN (EU) and ASTM joint sizes are both available.

Key Features

  • Borosilicate Glass 3.3: ISO 3585 compliant, low expansion, thermal shock 280°C
  • Built-in Vigreux Indentations: Increased vapor-liquid contact for enhanced separation
  • 2-in-1 Design: Combines fractionating column and distillation head functions
  • Standard Joint: 1:10 taper, precision ground for reliable sealing
  • Multiple Sizes: DIN (EU) 14/23 ~ 60/45 and ASTM equivalents
  • High Transparency: Easy observation of vapor flow and fractionation
  • Chemical Resistant: Suitable for various organic solvents

Quality Assurance

Every fractionating head undergoes strict dimensional inspection, joint taper testing, and thermal resistance testing to ensure compliance with applicable standards.

Note: Ensure joints are clean and dry before use to prevent sticking. Fractionating heads are particularly suitable for separating close-boiling mixtures. Use accessories of the same joint size for optimal sealing.

Applications

Typical Applications

Precise Fractionation

Separation of close-boiling mixtures

Solvent Purification

High-purity solvent distillation

Natural Product Extraction

Essential oils, fragrance fractionation

Organic Synthesis

Product purification and separation

Pharmaceutical R&D

Intermediate purification, chiral separation

Education

University organic chemistry lab teaching

Typical Apparatus Assembly

Distillation flask (bottom) → Fractionating head (lower joint)

Fractionating head (upper joint) → Condenser

Fractionating head (side arm) → Thermometer adapter (if temperature monitoring needed)

Can be used in series with Vigreux columns or packed columns for higher efficiency

Tip: The fractionating head combines the functions of a fractionating column and a distillation head. Built-in Vigreux indentations provide additional separation capability. Use accessories of the same joint size for optimal sealing.

Operation & Maintenance

User Guide

03

Preparation

  • Inspect fractionating head for cracks, chips, or scratched joints
  • Clean all joint surfaces and Vigreux indentations with a soft cloth or cotton swab
  • Apply a small amount of vacuum grease if joints are too tight
04

Installation & Connection

  • Connect the lower joint of the fractionating head to the distillation flask
  • Connect the upper joint to the condenser, ensure vertical alignment
  • Side arm can connect a thermometer adapter or serve as a vent
  • Insert with gentle twisting motion, do not force
  • Secure components with clamps for stability
05

Fractionation Operation

  • Check all joints for proper sealing
  • Begin heating, slowly raise to boiling temperature
  • Observe vapor rise and reflux through the Vigreux indentations
  • Adjust heating power, control reflux ratio (recommended 3:1 ~ 10:1)
  • Monitor fractionation temperature via thermometer adapter (if used)
  • Collect fractions at each temperature range
06

Disassembly & Cleaning

  • Stop heating first, allow system to cool
  • Gently twist to detach components (condenser first, then fractionating head)
  • Clean immediately after use to prevent residue buildup
  • Wash joints with soft brush and detergent, avoid hard objects
  • Clean Vigreux indentations with a long-handled soft brush
  • Air dry after washing, store with soft paper between joints

Safety Tips

  • Control temperature carefully when distilling flammable solvents
  • Ensure cooling water flow is maintained during fractionation
  • Always work in a fume hood when handling hazardous chemicals
Do not
  • Do not use cracked or chipped fractionating heads for experiments
