Product Description

The evaporating dish is a specialized vessel for evaporation and crystallization operations in the laboratory. Its design fully considers the operational requirements of heating and concentration experiments. The flat bottom provides stable placement on hot plates, water baths, or sand baths, while the spout facilitates clean pouring of concentrated liquids and transfer of crystalline products.

Design Features

  • Spout Design: A pouring spout on the rim allows clean transfer of concentrated liquids or crystalline products into receiving containers, preventing liquid from running down the outer wall and reducing sample loss and contamination.
  • Flat Bottom: Provides stable placement on hot plates, water baths, or sand baths with large and uniform heating area.
  • Shallow Dish Design: Wide opening and shallow depth facilitate rapid solvent evaporation and convenient collection of crystalline products.
  • Uniform Wall Thickness: Even heat distribution reduces thermal stress and minimizes the risk of breakage.

Material Advantage

Manufactured from Borosilicate Glass 3.3 in accordance with ISO 3585 standards. The ultra-low coefficient of thermal expansion (3.3×10⁻⁶/K) ensures resistance to thermal shock up to 280°C.

How It Works

The evaporating dish removes solvent from a solution by heating, thereby concentrating the solution or inducing crystallization of the solute. Widely used in chemical analysis, pharmaceutical production, and research for sample concentration and purification.

Note: Use a water bath or sand bath for gentle heating during evaporation to avoid bumping or sample decomposition. Stir continuously with a glass rod during evaporation to prevent localized overheating.

Applications

Common Configurations

  • Hot Plate/Water Bath + Evaporating Dish Gentle evaporation and concentration
  • Sand Bath + Evaporating Dish Uniform heating evaporation
  • Glass Rod + Evaporating Dish Stirring to prevent bumping
  • Watch Glass + Evaporating Dish Dust cover

Specific Applications

Solution Concentration

Increasing solution concentration, removing excess solvent

Crystallization Purification

Obtaining high-purity crystals via evaporation crystallization

Solvent Recovery

Evaporating and recovering organic solvents

Sample Preparation

Tip: Choose the evaporating dish size based on the solution volume to be processed. Small dishes are suitable for micro-scale sample concentration, while large dishes are ideal for rapid evaporation of large volumes.

Evaporating Dish Procedure

03

Heating

  • Place the evaporating dish on a hot plate, water bath, or sand bath with good contact.
  • Do not fill the dish beyond 2/3 of its capacity to prevent boiling over.
  • Stir continuously with a glass rod during heating to prevent bumping.
  • Stop heating when the solution is nearly dry and use residual heat to finish evaporation.
04

Crystallization

  • Add the solution to the dish and heat on a water bath.
  • Stop heating when the solution reaches the desired concentration and allow to cool for crystallization.
  • Use the spout to carefully decant the mother liquor after crystallization.
  • Air-dry crystals in the dish or transfer to a desiccator.
05

Cleaning

  • Clean immediately after use to prevent residue from drying.
  • Use dilute acid or specialized cleaning agents for stubborn residues.
  • Rinse with distilled water and air-dry upside down on filter paper.
  • Store carefully to avoid chipping.

Tip: The spout is particularly useful when pouring liquids — position the spout over the receiving container and tilt the dish slowly. Liquid will flow along the spout without running down the outer wall, reducing sample loss and contamination.

Care & Notes

Safety Notes

Stir continuously

during evaporation to prevent bumping.

Reduce heat or stop heating

when approaching dryness to prevent sample decomposition.

  • Inspect the dish for cracks or chips before use.
  • Use crucible tongs or heat-resistant gloves when handling hot dishes.
Do not
  • Use a water bath, sand bath, or hot plate for heating — never use an open flame directly as uneven heating may cause breakage.
