Product Description

I. Overview

Chromatography paper is manufactured from high-purity α-cellulose through acid-washing purification to remove metal ions and impurities, ensuring exceptional chemical purity and uniform capillary action. The surface is smooth and flat with uniform fiber distribution and stable capillary rise speed, providing clear separation and reproducible experimental results.

Widely used in Paper Chromatography, Electrophoresis, and Blotting techniques in life sciences, including Western Blot, Southern Blot, and Northern Blot. 3MM Chr is the industry standard for blotting procedures, the most widely used blotting paper.

🔬 Key Applications:
Paper Chromatography: Cellulose paper as stationary phase for amino acid, sugar, dye separation and identification.
Electrophoresis: Support medium for protein and nucleic acid separation.
Blotting: Transfer medium for biomolecule transfer from gels to membranes for detection.

II. Core Performance Parameters

  • Material: 100% High-purity α-cellulose (cotton linter pulp)
  • Acid Washing: Removes metal ions (Fe, Cu, Mn, etc.), purity ≥ 98% α-cellulose
  • Surface: Smooth, no optical brighteners
  • Capillary Rise (Distilled Water, 20℃): 130mm/30min (1Chr, 3MM Chr typical)
  • Thickness Range: 0.18mm (1Chr) ~ 1.5mm (GB005)
  • pH Range: 4-10
  • Ash Content: ≤ 0.02%
  • Optical Brighteners: None

III. Material & Workmanship

Manufactured from imported high-quality cotton linter through alkalization and bleaching, followed by dilute hydrochloric acid/hydrofluoric acid treatment to remove metal ions and silicates. Precision-formed using cylinder paper machines ensuring oriented fiber alignment, uniform thickness, and smooth surface.

All products are cut and packaged in cleanroom environments to prevent secondary contamination.

II. By Thickness

  • Thin (0.18-0.20mm): 1Chr, 2Chr — Paper chromatography
  • Medium (0.34mm): 3MM Chr — Most common, blotting applications
  • Thick (0.80-0.92mm): GB003, 17Chr — High sample loading
  • Ultra-thick (1.50mm): GB005 — High absorbency blotting

III. By Standard Methods

  • Western Blot Standard: 3MM Chr (industry standard)
  • Southern Blot Standard: 3MM Chr or GB005
  • Paper Chromatography: 1Chr
  • Electrophoresis Support: 1Chr or 3MM Chr

💡 Selection Tip: 3MM Chr is the most widely used blotting paper for Western Blot, Southern Blot, and Northern Blot applications.
For paper chromatography, 1Chr is the standard grade providing clearest separation.
For high sample loading or high absorbency, GB005 (ultra-thick) or 17Chr (thick) are ideal choices.

Operation & Maintenance

User Guide

Below are standard operating guidelines for chromatography paper. Proper use ensures optimal separation and reliable experimental results.

03

I. Paper Chromatography Operation

  1. Cut the chromatography paper to desired size (use a glass cutter to avoid rough edges)
  2. Draw a pencil line 2-3cm from the bottom edge (do not use pen or marker)
  3. Apply sample on the pencil line, dry between applications, repeat 3-5 times for concentration
  4. Place the paper vertically in the developing chamber, ensure sample line is above solvent level
  5. Remove when solvent front reaches 1-2cm from the top, mark the solvent front line
  6. Dry and visualize with detection reagents (e.g., ninhydrin, UV lamp)
04

II. Blotting Operation (Western Blot)

  1. Cut 3MM Chr paper to the same size as the gel
  2. Thoroughly saturate in transfer buffer (3MM Chr requires 15-20 minutes)
  3. Assemble the "sandwich": Sponge → 3MM Chr → Gel → Membrane → 3MM Chr → Sponge
  4. Remove all bubbles between layers using a glass rod or roller
  5. Place the sandwich in the transfer apparatus, add buffer, run at constant current or voltage
  6. After transfer, remove the membrane for blocking, antibody incubation, and detection
05

III. Important Notes

  • Chromatography paper is single-use only
  • Store in a dry, cool place to prevent moisture absorption
  • Do not touch the chromatography area with bare hands to avoid oil contamination
  • Use clean glass cutter or scissors to avoid rough edges that affect capillary action
  • Dispose according to laboratory waste regulations after use

💡 From a Seasoned Lab Technician: "Pencil only, never pen" — Always use pencil for marking; ink from pens will migrate during development and contaminate the chromatogram.
"Saturate 3MM thoroughly" — 3MM Chr requires full saturation in transfer buffer (15-20 minutes recommended). Any bubbles in the sandwich will cause uneven transfer.
"Seal the chamber for saturation" — The developing chamber must be well sealed to achieve solvent saturation, otherwise separation is poor and Rf values are unstable.
