Self-Zeroing Burette

Automatic Zero Return · Schellbach Stripe · 10mL – 50mL

The self-zeroing burette combines titrant storage, refilling, and measurement in one unit. The upper reservoir connects directly to the graduated tube, so a gentle squeeze of the bottle refills the tube and brings the meniscus back to the zero mark — no repeated zeroing before each titration. The tube is made of borosilicate glass 3.3 with a black Schellbach stripe that sharpens the meniscus line for accurate reading. A micro-adjustment knob gives fine dropwise control, and the flow can be accelerated by releasing the knob while pressing the button. Error class complies with DIN EN ISO 385 Class B. Well suited to serial volumetric analysis.

Product Description

The self-zeroing burette connects the reservoir, the refill channel, and the graduated tube into a single body. Titrant is supplied from the upper reservoir, so there is no need to pour and top up from outside; squeezing the bottle pushes the liquid level back to the zero mark. The whole titration is controlled by the micro-adjustment knob and the delivery button, keeping operation continuous and the starting point of each reading consistent.

Self-Zeroing · No Re-Zeroing

With a conventional burette, the level must be reset to the zero mark after each refill — time-consuming and a source of reading error. The self-zeroing design returns the meniscus to zero automatically after refilling, so every titration starts from the same baseline. This speeds up work and makes serial samples easier to compare.

Operating Principle

  • Refilling: Squeeze the reservoir; titrant flows through the inlet tube into the graduated body, and the meniscus returns to the zero mark.
  • Fine delivery: Turn the micro-adjustment knob to control the opening of the delivery tip for dropwise or half-drop titration.
  • Fast delivery: For quicker titration, release the knob while pressing the button to increase the flow rate.
  • Reading: The black Schellbach stripe turns the meniscus into a fine line; read at eye level with the lowest point.

Design Features

  • Integrated reservoir: The bottle connects directly to the tube, reducing transfer steps and the risk of titrant contamination.
  • Schellbach stripe: A black band behind the tube uses optical backing to sharpen the meniscus for precise reading.
  • Micro-adjustment knob: Fine travel allows steady, small-volume additions for confident endpoint detection.
  • Stable base: The bottle is held in a base for a steady stand during titration.
  • Clear graduations: Divisions down to 0.05mL meet routine volumetric-analysis reading needs.

Material & Construction

The tube is made of borosilicate glass 3.3, chemically resistant with a low expansion coefficient. The inlet tube is PVC, the delivery tube is silicone, the reservoir is PE-LD, the base is PE-HD, the sleeve is polyamide, and the micro-adjustment knob is brass/PP. The titrant contacts mainly glass, silicone, and PE-LD, avoiding unwanted reaction with the analytical solution.

Usage Tip: Before use, check that the knob and tubing move freely and seal properly. Squeeze the bottle gently when refilling to avoid overshooting the zero mark or trapping air. Deliver slowly with the knob first, then switch to dropwise control near the endpoint. Rinse the tubing with distilled water after use to keep the delivery tip free of crystallized residue.

Applications

Key Application Areas

Acid-Base Titration

Self-zeroing gives a consistent starting reading and good repeatability

No re-zeroing reduces manual reading error

Industries Served

  • Pharmaceutical Industry API content determination, quality control
  • Chemical Industry Product purity analysis
  • Environmental Monitoring Water quality analysis
  • Food Testing Food composition analysis
  • Third-Party Testing High-throughput sample analysis
  • Research Institutions Standard calibration

Comparison with Other Burettes

  • vs Acid Burette No repeated stopcock rotation or re-zeroing — smoother workflow
  • vs Alkaline Burette No rubber tube aging, thanks to direct reservoir feed
  • vs Automatic (Air-Pressure) Burette No external gas supply needed — squeeze the bottle to refill, ready to use
Best Suited For

Laboratories running continuous or serial titrations, and standardized testing where a consistent baseline reading matters. The larger reservoir covers many titrations before refilling, reducing interruptions.

Self-Zeroing Burette Procedure

03

Preparation

  • Inspect the tube for cracks or scratches, and check that the knob, button, and tubing move freely.
  • Check that all connections are properly sealed to avoid leakage during titration or refilling.
  • Rinse the tube and delivery tip 2–3 times with the titrant, about 5–10mL each time.
  • Fill the reservoir with titrant, not exceeding the marked capacity.
04

Refilling & Zeroing

  • Squeeze the reservoir gently so titrant flows through the inlet tube into the graduated body.
  • Stop squeezing when the level reaches the zero mark; the self-zeroing design holds it there.
  • If air is trapped in the tip, deliver a little titrant to clear it, then refill to zero.
  • Begin titration only after the level is confirmed at zero.
05

Titration

  • Turn the micro-adjustment knob slowly to deliver — the opening sets the flow rate.
  • Reduce the opening near the endpoint for dropwise or half-drop control.
  • For faster delivery, release the knob while pressing the button to increase flow.
  • Read with your eye level with the lowest point of the meniscus; the black stripe helps align the line.
06

Cleaning & Maintenance

  • Clean promptly after use to prevent crystallized residue from blocking the tip or tubing.
  • Flush the tube, inlet tube, and delivery tip several times with distilled water.
  • Use dilute acid or a specialized cleaning agent for stubborn residue, then rinse.
  • Air-dry naturally; avoid high-temperature drying of the plastic parts and reservoir.
  • Store on a burette stand, away from pressure on the bottle and from impact.

Tip: The self-zeroing design greatly reduces repeated zeroing, making it well suited to serial titration. Following the order of rinse, de-bubble, then zero keeps the starting conditions consistent and the readings reliable.

Care & Notes

Safety Notes

  • Wear safety goggles and gloves to prevent splashing onto eyes or skin.
  • Inspect the tube and bottle for cracks before use — damaged parts may break under pressure.
Do not
  • Squeeze the reservoir gently and steadily to avoid a sudden rise in level or splashing.
  • Do not leave strongly corrosive solutions in the reservoir for extended periods.
  • Handle and store with care, avoiding impact with hard surfaces.
